Sensory processing refers to the way the brain processes information from the environment through the sensory receptors of the body and then uses that information to perform appropriate motor and behavioral responses.
There are 7 sensory systems- Vision, Auditory, Tactile, Proprioceptive, Vestibular, Oral and Olfactory.
For each sensory system, a person can be overly sensitive or can be under sensitive.
Here are some of our favorite links that provide good explanations of each sensory system. We have also provided links for strategies regarding each sensory system. It is important to discuss ANY sensory activity with your Occupational Therapist before implementing it into your child’s daily routine. An OT can assess the child’s arousal level and make appropriate recommendations.
