Motivation

Our event is part of the long tradition of conferences (https://wiki.sagemath.org/Workshops). Since 2007, more than 100 Sage Days have been organized around the world. During these days, participants discover the SageMath software, develop their programming skills and contribute to the development of the software. SageMath is free mathematics software developed by the research community, students, and research engineers. It relies heavily on voluntary contributions as well as on the one-off funding of research projects. Women in Sage days have already been organized in seven different countries (United States, South Korea, France, Canada, Greece, Senegal and Nigeria). All have been successful (see for example http://africanwomeninmath.org/activities/conference/women-in-sage-in-senegal organized by E. Lorenzo García and M.-F. Ouedraogo in September 2021 and http://africanwomeninmath.org/activities/conference/women-in-sage-nigeria organized by Ini Adinya and E. Lorenzo García in September 2022). Not only did the participants improve their programming skills, contributed to the software, but they also created research collaborations and gained confidence in their own skills. We believe that Women in Sage days organized at Makerere University with the support of the African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA) and Eastern Africa Network for Women in Basic Sciences -Uganda (EANWoBAS-U)/ Uganda Women Mathematicians (UGAWOM) is an opportunity for the whole community.

Venue: Makerere University

Makerere University

P.O.BOX 7062

Kampala, Uganda

Makerere University is located on Makerere Hill which is one of the many hills on which Kampala, the Capital City of Uganda, is built. The main Campus is about 5 km to the North of the City Centre covering an area of 300 acres. The location offers an excellent academic environment free from all forms of disturbances associated with city centre locations, as portrayed in the University Anthem.

 Programme

Our event is a collaborative conference addressed to young African researchers and graduate students. Particularly, but not exclusively, to young female researchers. There will be 5 research projects and the areas of interest include: Algebra, Combinatorics, Analysis, Number Theory and Applied Mathematics. Four of the main project leaders have confirmed their participation. The program will also include discussions on gender balance and women in mathematics.

Tentative schedule:

- one week before the workshop: an online event of introduction to SageMath and opening of a workshop chat via the Zulip platform to encourage the contact between the participants and the group leaders before the in-person part of the workshop.

- During the workshop (4-8 September 2023): working in groups from Monday to Friday morning and some talks on Women in Mathematics presenting AWMA (African Women Mathematics Association), EANWoBAS-Uganda (Eastern Africa Network for Women in Basic Sciences- Uganda) in conjunction with Uganda Women Mathematicians(UGAWOM) and CIMPA opportunities. On Friday after Tea Break, participants will present projects that will have been given to them during the week. For a detailed schedule, see  below:
