In Phase 1 of the Diverse Text Set Project, coaches worked collaboratively with several of Dr. Muhammad’s coaches to write unit and lesson plans for the selected texts. As Phase 1 continues into the future, coaches will work with other Network coaches who have been trained by one of Dr. Muhammad’s coaches to lead this work.
The Cultivating Relevant Pedagogy Facilitator team is supporting the Diverse Text Set Project which currently has two phases. The first phase in 2022-2023 included writing Culturally and Historically Relevant Educational (CHRE) Unit Plans with Dr. Gholdy Muhammad and her coaches. During Phase two, participants will engage in the Cultivating Genius Train the Trainer and collect data during mini-coaching cycles with classroom teachers. The culmination of resources below came from the work of participants from across the Early Literacy Network throughout Phase 1. The network is encouraged to use these resources to engage in coaching with classroom teachers.

3rd Grade
Magic Trash (there are 2 units, with two different themes from which to choose)
These “formatted” units use the Historically Responsive Legacy (HRL) lesson plan template and were written by Early Literacy Coaches across the state. As part of the Phase 1 work of the Diverse Text Set Project, Early Literacy Coaches attended learning and work sessions with Dr. Muhammad’s coaches. At the culmination of Phase 1, Dr. Muhammad reviewed the units submitted by Early Literacy Coaches and provided individualized feedback. The Early Literacy Coaches then made revisions and the HRL lesson template was expanded to reflect the extent of the coaching partnership between Early Literacy Coaches and Dr. Muhammad’s coaches.
Units that were reviewed by Dr. Gholdy Muhammad will have the following statement at the bottom of the document:
🌱This was submitted and reviewed as a Final Unit for Feedback to Dr. Gholdy Muhammad🌱

In Phase 2 of the Diverse Text Set Project, coaches work under the guidance of trained Network coaches to implement one or more of the existing Diverse Text Set Units with classroom teachers.
The Guide on the Side is designed for coaches and teachers to use as they prepare to teach the desired anchor text to assure that assumptions are considered.
The purpose of the Guide on the Side is to allow the coach and teacher to slow down and reflect on themselves and the students they serve, so they can create learning experiences that are meaningful and relevant to the students in front of them.
The Coaching Guide includes a set of questions to support coaches as they work collaboratively with teachers to implement the Unit Plans.
The purpose of the Coaching Guide is for the coach to consider transformational practices in implementing the CHRE Framework with a classroom teacher in becoming a culturally and historically relevant educator.
Review slides and/or watch recordings of an Early Literacy Coach share how she managed her coaching plan from Phase 2. This coach, Tracey Yacks, participated in Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the project. In the first video, Tracey walks through her plan and in the second she shares the adjustments and outcomes from the coaching cycle with a teacher using the unit Milo Imagines the World. If you would like an overview for preparing and planning a coaching cycle, please see the Planning for a Coaching Cycle Document.
The data collection for Phase 2 of the project contains student, teacher, and coach survey data across 25 classrooms and 13 districts. ISD Early Literacy Coaches partnered with teachers in their county to implement mini-coaching cycles using CHRE units and lessons from Phase 1 of the project. Surveys are available for teachers and coaches to collect their own data for administrators and continue data collection for the project.
Testimonial videos support teachers, coaches, and administrators with sharing and collaborating around student impact of the Diverse Text Set Project. These videos capture the outcomes of Phase 2 of the project through the compilation of student, teacher, and coach interviews.
Full Length Testimonial Video
This video captures more testimonials from students, teachers, and coaches and less data than Promotional Video. Potential audiences may include teacher(s) who want more information or parents.
Promotional Video
This video has the same content, but has fewer testimonials than the full-length video. This video also includes data that highlights the impact of the project. Potential audiences may include administrators and staff meetings. Everyone benefits from seeing and hearing this work showcased.
