¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español! As the second most widely spoken language in the world, Spanish is considered to be very beneficial second language for native speakers of American English. The knowledge of Spanish can enrich your life and bring a lot of new opportunities in it. In order to make your language learning easy and enjoyable, make sure that you comply with the following rules and regulations.
Course description: Spanish I is a college preparatory class. It promotes the use of all the language skills and presents material with gradually increasing complexity. Students will develop the following skills in Spanish:
- Speaking/ Pronunciation
- Listening / Oral comprehension
- Reading
- Writing
- Vocabulary
- Culture

The only online dictionary that I recommend for students is
www. wordreference.com. Use this site to look up individual or compound words, not phrases. Word-for-word online translating is considered cheating.
For some more difficult grammar concepts, you may find that http://www.studyspanish.com is helpful.
Course goals
Upon satisfactory completion of this course students will be able:
a) understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics;
b) participate in conversations, to express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions;
d) demonstrate the knowledge of history and culture of Spanish-speaking countries.
Grading procedures
- Grades are determined by the performance on oral and written quizzes and tests, homework assignments, cultural activities and presentations, class participation, and final examination grades.
- It is your responsibility to keep track of your grade on Aeries. If you have a question or concern about it, you must make an appointment with me after school. Do not ask me about your grade during class.
- Grades are assigned according to the following scale:
90 – 100 = A, 80 – 89 = B, 70 – 79 = C, 60 -69 + D, 0 – 59 = F.
Evaluations: Below, you will find a breakdown for all components of this course:
· Tests: 35%
· Oral participation: 20%
· Class work: 15%
· Homework: 15%
· Final Exam: 15%
- No credit will be given for any incomplete work done in class or at home.
- Make-up work missed due to the excused absence must be completed within three days of your return.
- Students absent for school-sponsored activities are not excused for missing work.
- Quizzes and tests must be made up the day that you return. It is your responsibility to bring it to my attention that you missed a test.
- No one will be allowed to make up any quiz or test that has already been graded and returned to the rest of the class.
Class rules and procedures
- Each student will be required to adhere to the rules and procedures for behavior as described in the Milpitas High School Student Handbook.
- Each student will be required to abide by the attendance and tardy policies and procedures as described in the Milpitas High School Student Handbook. With each unexcused tardy student will lose 3 participation points in class.
- Each student will be expected to participate actively in class, paying close attention, participating in group activities, taking notes, etc.
- Working in groups, you must speak in a low voice avoiding excessive noise in class.
- Since students will be required to speak clearly and practice articulation exercises, no gum will be allowed in class.
- You will be given 6 bathroom passes per semester. It is disrespectful interrupt my in class presentations when you need to go to bathroom.
- Please wait until class is working independently and you can speak to me privately.
- Students have to put away their electronic devices during class time. Phones are allowed with my permission only. Students cannot charge their phones in classroom.
- No food or drinks are allowed in class.
- Keep your backpacks, purses and bags under your desk.
- If students demonstrate the type of behavior that is out of the above mentioned limits, they will receive warning. With the third warning detention will be assigned (10 minutes after school).
- Two detentions will result in referral.
