What is GMAS?

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System is a comprehensive assessment system spanning grades 3 through high school. Georgia Milestones measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. 

Who takes GMAS?

Students in grades 3 and up take the Georgia Milestones Assessment. 

How many questions? 

ELA is 50- 53 questions spread out in 3 sections. 

Math is 55 questions broken into 2 sections. 

Science is 42 questions broken into 2 sections. 

Test Breakdown

ELA Section 1      

Test time: 

⏱️ Up to 90 minutes for 3rd & 5th grade

⏱️ Up to 50 minutes for 4th grade

(an audio or video clip will be included in this section)

  • 2-4 sources (varies by grade level)

  • 4 questions

    • Selected-response

    • Technology-enhanced

    • Extended writing task (grades 3 & 5) 

    • Peer revision task (grade 4)

ELA Section 2

⏱️ Up to 75 minutes

  • 3-4 texts

  • 23-24 questions

    • Selected-response (SR)

    • Evidence-based selected-response

    • Technology-enhanced (TE)

ELA Section 3
