Music Curriculum Chorus

  • Singing is a learned behavior. Every student can learn to sing with proper direction!
  • For the first few weeks of school all fourth graders will have the opportunity to participate in chorus! I would like to use the beginning of the year for everyone to try chorus out. At the end of September the students will decide if they would like to stay in chorus for the entire year.
  • In Chorus students learn how to energize the body, the breath, the ear, and the voice. This technique was developed by Ken Phillips used in Teaching Kids to Sing. These are vital techniques for healthy vocal production.
  • This year students will explore their singing voices and sing new repertoire. In a chorus class we work as a team to create beautiful music, therefore full participation is required.
  • The following are topics that will be covered in chorus class:
    • Breathing techniques, proper posture, singing in the CT (head voice), transferring from the chest voice to the CT voice, dynamics, the use of dynamics in chorus, pitch, range, sight singing, rhythm, repertoire, diction, expression, major modes, minor modes, various rhythmic meters and working as a team to create music.
  • Students will learn how to sing partner songs, rounds, and choral repertoire.
  • Students will have a say in the repertoire they are singing. I pick quality repertoire targeted to teach one of the above techniques and have the students vote on what they would like to sing.
  • Aside from the Railer's Game there will be a Winter Concert and a Spring Concert.
