Pogue Special Collections Library is home to several collections containing items relating to Black history in the region, including aspects such as slavery, daily life, and the work of local civil rights and education leaders. Items include letters from local enslavers, photographs of local Black residents, and writings/documents relating to Clarence L. Timberlake, a civil rights leader from Fleming County, KY. The collections span from roughly 1800-1980.
Dr. Theodore Roosevelt Mason Howard (left in 1955, image from Carnegie Museum of Art) was a Murray native and notable civil rights icon best known for his involvement in the Emmett Till murder trial and mentoring other civil rights leaders such as Jesse Jackson. A collection of his papers are housed at the Chicago Public Library.
