Each year, students in 2nd grade participate in the CogAT assessment as part of the district's gifted identification process.
Families are notified about the assessment process through ParentSquare in November/December, with testing occurring approximately January–March.
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) looks at different types of reasoning and problem-solving abilities. It is designed to provide information about how students reason and solve problems—not simply what they have already learned.Â
CogAT results are one part of the identification process.
Student information and school data are considered as part of the placement process rather than relying on one score alone.
A single test score does not define a child's abilities.
The Gifted & Talented Placement Committee reviews the available information and makes a placement recommendation.Â
Identified students are recommended for placement in a GT cluster classroom for the following school year.Â
Families receive their student’s identification results.
Students who are identified for gifted services in grades 3–6 receive services through MCSD's cluster classroom model at their neighborhood boundary school.
Students in grades 3–5 who have not previously been assessed may be recommended for gifted identification by their school team or parent/guardian.Â
Yes. Parents/guardians may appeal the results and decision of the Gifted & Talented Placement Committee within 14 days of receiving their student's results.Â
