Dual credit is a college-level course offered to high school students, where students earn both high school and college credit. To be eligible for dual credit courses, students must meet the requirements as specified by the dual credit postsecondary partner. All dual credit courses taken will be listed on the student transcript at the high school level and are weighted.
Students and parents should attend an annual meeting related to dual credit information, student and parent expectations, postsencondary obligations, and high school graduation requirements to understand the ramifications of the benefits and challenges related to dual credit.
Students must be a junior or senior, must have at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA for MSU Dual Credit courses AND a teacher recommendation to qualify for dual credit courses.
Dual Credit courses are held each semester (August-December and January-May) and are mostly online courses that Murray High students will take at MHS during one of their 7 class periods. Each dual credit course is worth 0.5 credit for their Murray High School transcript and has a number of credit hours attached to their college transcript. Dual credit courses are weighted courses. Students will work on their own and must adhere to MSU timelines and rules/regulations.
Some of the benefits of taking a dual credit course(s) are:
saving money on tuition (most students will receive a dual credit/work ready scholarship to pay for their class(es).
students can earn a degree faster after high school
Students will have access to MSU Canvas to access their coursework and their MSU email account. Students must check these DAILY! If they do not have access, they need to let a MHS counselor know ASAP.
The grade your student receives in dual credit classes will be on his or her Murray High transcript and Murray State transcript. Even if your student does not attend Murray State, these grades will follow them to the college(s) they attend.
Murray High School students must adhere to MHS drop/add dates for these classes. MSU drop/add dates DO NOT APPLY.

Another important note - Only students (not parents or teachers) have access to their courses and grades. Teachers and counselors schedule periodic grade checks to help provide a layer of accountability. Students can access their MSU grades on Canvas at any point in the semester, so to monitor at home simply ask your student to log in to his or her Canvas account.
Do NOT pay any bills from MSU until you have checked with Mrs. Carman to make sure you owe the amount billed.
Most students qualify for 4 dual credit scholarships per year (2 work ready and 2 dual credit). To qualify, students must reside in KY and have a social security number.
KHEAA typically distributes these funds to colleges by mid-March. If your account is still showing a balance in April, please contact the counseling office and we can help resolve that matter.
Scholarships do not cover the cost of books. Students should reference their course syllabi to find their required texts.
Counselors will help students accept their scholarships from KHEAA in February.
Counselors will visit AP Lang classes in February to assist with accepting scholarships and creating an MSU account (if they have not already).

The MHS Counselors will help you with the process of registering for your dual credit courses.
Students will need to have at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA to qualify for MSU Racer Academy.
Some Racer Academy courses also have an ACT requirement.
First-time Racer Academy students will need to apply to MSU Racer Academy online.
Juniors/Seniors wishing to take a Racer Academy course will choose Racer Academy Fall or Racer Academy Spring as their Infinite Campus course registration choices (this takes place in February each year for the next school year).
School Counselors will contact all students wishing to take Racer Academy courses to discuss the class/classes they wish to take and help them complete the Guidance Counselor/Principal approval form.
The MHS Counseling Office will submit the Guidance Counselor/Principal approval form and a copy of the student's most recent transcript to the MSU Racer Academy office.
MHS Counselors will help Racer Academy students claim their Dual Credit/Work Ready Scholarships on KHEAA. If students have exceeded their allotment of scholarships, they will be responsible for paying for the course at $95 per credit hour.
Racer Academy students are responsible for purchasing required textbooks. They will learn if a textbook is required when they read the syllabus for their class.
Murray High School course change/withdrawal procedures apply to all Racer Academy courses.
