“You're not safe”
It was the middle of winter in late 1970s Chicago in the midst of a serial killing spree. The residents of the Windy City were chaos walking, constantly looking over their shoulders with worried eyes and clenched fists, their adrenaline, rooting in fear kicking in every time they’re alone, scared of even their own soft footsteps on the gravelly paths and their shadow, distorted by their imagination for entertainment.Afraid that one night the Windy City Murderer would come to their house and kill them. One of these residents was Sandra Higgins, the golden girl of Niles West High School.Head cheerleader, straight A’s,Multiple scholarships, she was as perfect as anyone has ever seen. Her blonde shoulder length voluminous hair perfectly frames her oval face. Her naturally long lashes helps to enhance her mesmerizing ocean blue eyes and her light freckles peppered on her cheeks and nose only further added to her charm. She was perfect, her life was perfect until the fateful Wednesday night where everything changed.
“Sandra, you're safe on your own,not with a serial killer on the loose. You need to come out to the cabin as soon as possible” said Sandra’s mom on the phone “Mom I’m gonna be fine.Really, the windows and doors are already locked,I’m just washing the dishes then going to bed.Anyway schools almost out so I’ll be up there by next week.Yeah,I love you.Ok,bye”.Sandra placed the bright pink phone onto its holster on the wall with a loud exasperated sigh.”Shouldn't have went up to the cabin and left here alone in the first place mom”.Despite knowing she needed to clean up,she walked into her sitting room where she took a nap for three hours with her dog Sunshine before doing so.She woke up and lazily walked into the kitchen, groaning and complaining to herself about having to wash up.Her hands were sunk deep into her dark navy high waisted jeans. She took them out as she reached the sink and twisted the cold metal sink knob to turn on the water.A small drop of water dropped into the marble basin but nothing else.”What the-“.Sandra twisted the knob again, faster this time until it went as far as it could and the second it reached its limit,a violent discharge of water released from the faucet and vigorously splashed against the basin and onto her.She frantically twisted the knob to turn the water off and in doing so,she accidentally knocked a plate onto the floor and watched in smash to pieces.”For god's sake well done Sandra, you’ve really done it this time” she muttered furiously to herself.
Hearing the commotion,Sunshine leapt off of the couch she was sprawled upon and ran to the kitchen, her long tongue hanging from her mouth.”No Sunshine!Stay away!Bad dog!”scolded Sandra while pushing the dog away.”Sandra tiptoed towards the back door narrowly avoided pieces of sharp porcelain all over the kitchen’s marble tiles. She opened the door and felt the cool breeze blow through her, causing her to shiver.”Sunshine,go on!Go out!I’ll let you in in a minute”She quickly slammed the door shut to prevent more cold entering the house. She pulled the arms of her woollen sweater down to cover her hands, feeling the warmth beginning to come back into her body. She got the brush and pan and knelt down to sweep up the remnants of the porcelain. In swift movements she was able to clear the pieces of porcelain into the dust pan.As she stood up off the now clear kitchen floor, she heard a loud whelp followed a faint scratching at the door.”Sunshine?!” Sandra yelled out
She leant the brush against her fridge and ran towards the door.A sense of uneasiness began to overwhelm her,the scratching,it didn’t sound the same as it often does.It was softer, and wasn’t as sharp.Sandra’s heart rate began to go up,she could hear her heart beating louder and much more clearly. She cautiously walked towards the door and before opening it,she pressed her face against the door and looked through the peephole.Sandra gasped loudly and fell backwards onto the floor. It was a man wearing a dark mask covering his face, scratching at her door in attempt to fool her.The scratching came to a halt.Sandra gulped and stood up.She swiftly ran to the door once again and looked through the peephole, hoping that whoever he was had left her alone. She looked through the peephole and the scratching started again.Sandra stayed there, watching him, waiting for him to leave. Then he looked up,right at the peephole and smiled maliciously, drooling in anticipation for his next victim. He began loudly banging on the door while laughing maniacally.”Help me,Sandra Dee,I’ve been attacked.I need help” he said sarcastically before bursting out into laughter.”That’s right,I’ve done my research” he drawled,I’ve been watching you for a while now Sandra and I must say, your the prettiest one yet”He said mockingly
Sandra stepped away from the door and ran over to the kitchen. She grabbed a knife and ran downstairs to hide in her mother's workshop. She ducked under her mother’s table and took deep breaths.Bang! The door upstairs fell right off its hinges. He was in the house. She waited there, grimacing at every footstep, hearing them, feeling them in the floor’s vibrations getting closer and closer every second until he was in the workshop. She sat still, knife in hand. Her shallow breath trembling. She heard the footsteps getting closer and at this point he was right next to her.She could see the top of his boots just beside her and he could hear her breathing. He quickly swung his knife around the corner and thrust it into her leg.The shock and fear immobilised her and he managed to grab her hair and yank it causing her head to smash into the cold hard ground.Still, although groggy she managed to lift her head and plunge the knife deep into his chest. He looked down at his wound, his eyes wide open in fear but yet with a smile in his face and he laughed. He then fell with a hard thud.He stopped moving.
Sandra sighed heavily. She stood up from the floor and limped towards the round and dusty mirror. As she stood next to a puddle of her own blood, she lifted her hair back to reveal a nasty gash on her left temple. She looked down and began fumbling around her mothers home made wooden drawers for a steriliser. She couldn’t find any,the next step she knew she needed to do was to contact the police. She looked back up at the mirror to take another look at the gash and realised that he was gone. His body wasn’t on the floor anymore. She began whimpering and turned around, only to have a large hand cover her face and shove her head backwards into the mirror. She felt sharp glass dig into her neck. She felt the warm blood rushing down her neck into her back, soaking into her sweater. She fell to the floor, the whole mirror crashing on her.She watched as the killer dipped his finger into the pool of crimson red blood and began to write something on the wall with it.She was too dizzy to see what it said though. She felt around her, hoping to find something she could use to kill him.She felt a sharp cut sticking into her hand as she felt her surrounding and she winced. It was glass from the mirror. The killer didn’t seem to notice her moving.Sandra grabbed a shard of glass and grasped it tightly ignoring the sharp pain. She stood up,leaning heavily on her right food as her left foot was limp. She began walking towards the killer,in hand and as she got close enough, she dived on him and jabbed the piece of glass into his neck,a stream of blood came shooting out.He fell once again and this time she felt his pulse. He was dead. The weird thing was that it was almost like he didn’t even try to fight back
She limped towards the stairway and slowly began to walk up it,leaning heavily on the banister, ignoring the multiple splinters it was giving her.She reached upstairs and called the police with the same pink phone she as speaking to her mother with.As the phone was ringing the words “you won’t be safe on your own,not with a serial killer on the loose. You need to come out to the cabin as soon as possible” rang in her head, over and over. She just wanted to hug her mother,to see her and have some sense of comfort. The phone answered and a 911 dispatcher spoke with Sandra.Although Sandra spoke frantically and almost incoherently the dispatcher was able to get the gist of where the police needed to go and do.
The police arrived promptly and quickly went downstairs to asses the situation.”Is he dead, please say he’s dead” asked Sandra with a hopefulness that the policeman saw as almost disturbing in a way.”Yes,he’s dead, you killed him” replied the policeman still stunned by the level of blood in the workshop.Sandra smirked, she did it,she won.She killed the Windy City Killer. She chuckled at this thought, only now just realising that she was much stronger than she knew.”Have you by any chance seen the message he left for you miss?” asked the policeman.Sandra shook her head,in all the madness she forgot about the message. The policeman brought her downstairs, feeling queasy while staring at the blood coating the banister. As she walked down the stairs, many of the police stared at her, some with a sad look in their eyes, some with a worried look.Sandra knew something was wrong and as she read the message she realised what it was.
“The dog is dead” and just under that was “Kill me and you’ll never find your mother, here’s a hint, she’s not in the cabin anymore.
