April and May at MIN

Another month, another mile travelled in Mums In Need’s journey as we build towards a bigger and brighter future. April showered down some more fantastic opportunities and our May seemed a lot more hopeful than Theresa’s.

One of our wonderful supporters Julie Grigg took part in the Sheffield Half Marathon, racing towards a massive £215 for our charity. Nothing makes us feel more grateful than when we see people in our community going above and beyond to help us, and could not be prouder of supporters like Julie for their hard work and determination. 

One of our most trusted ways of fundraising is the distribution of our MIN fundraising tins, and with every tin that we get out there, the more funds raised to help us to help the women who need it most. Such a simple act can really make a huge difference. And so we want to say a great big thank you to Birdhouse Tea Company, Forge Dam Cafe and Two Steps Fish and Chip Shop for taking aboard their own MIN tins, and to show how much it really does help.

We counted up the total amount raised from last year’s MIN tins which was an amazing £1,891.89! To every business out there already with a MIN tin, we will never stop being grateful for your support. And for anyone interested in taking on a MIN tin of your own, please get in touch!

Earlier in the month, two of our wonderful trustees Antony and Olivia also attended the training session by BHP Chartered Accountants to learn more about all aspects of being a trustee. We are always looking for ways to learn and develop and highly value sessions such as these which give us the opportunities to improve.

For the past year and a half, our social media team has been headed by the super star student Marianne from the University of Sheffield. Her expertise and talent has allowed our social media to flourish and her support has been vital to the rest of the team. Unfortunately, she will soon be moving on to pastures new as she leaves Sheffield behind but not without a parting gift. As part of Marianne’s dissertation, she carried out interviews with our staff and the women who have used our support services. From this research, she developed a set of policy recommendations which, if implemented, would drastically improve the support available to coercive control victims. All of this can be found on our website under ‘Campaigning and Advocacy’. 

We also welcome our newest trustee Sarah, whose journey began with us as a service user. Mums In Need could not be any prouder that, after receiving our service, she is now in a position where she wants to support others who have experienced the same abuse that led her to our charity. We cannot wait for the invaluable knowledge and experience she will undoubtedly bring to the role and how she will help us grow.

With every month that passes, we face new challenges that only get bigger as we do. But every hurdle that we overcome helps us to help more women, and in the end, that is all that matters.
