Lululemon has officially become Canada's outfitter for the next four Olympic tournaments. Calvin McDonald, the CEO of Lululemon States in a news release that “Through this partnership, all of us at Lululemon are honoured to play our part to inspire, unite and transform the world through sport”. The Canadian Olympic Committee announced on Thursday of September 23 that Lululemon will be the official outfitter and clothing brand representing Canada in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
So what does this particularly mean for Canada? Lululemon will be taking over the contract from Hudson Bay Company, this marks a significant change in the status quo, as HBC have been a part of Canada’s clothing in the Olympics since the Winter 2006 Games in Turin, Italy.
In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which took place in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Canadian athletes wore a Hudson's Bay designed “Canadian Tuxedo” (a denim jacket) for the closing ceremony. A New York Times culture writer described the Canadian delegation as “the gang that comes after you if you say you tried watching Schitts Creek”. Another reason why the clothing was made fun of was because one of the shirts that the Canadian Athletes would wear.
As for the Lululemon takeover- so far there is a teasing image that shows a red puffy jack and red athletic wear. More information and images are sure to come as we approach the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.
