Dear future AP Literature students,
This summer, to prepare for our course in the fall, read one of the contemporary novels above, plus the corresponding author interview. In addition, prepare answers to the discussion questions below. I recommend you read the book in August so that it's fresh in your mind in September.
Getting off screens and instead experiencing reading a physical book (hardcover or paperback) is strongly preferred. If you must read an ebook, please choose an official version such as Kindle. Bootleg PDFs and trashy free online versions may contain errors and don't support the artists. If cost is a barrier, please contact the Kamiak main office, or me -- see buttons below. We may be able to help. These books each cost between $9-$20 plus tax on Amazon.
You will be working closely with your book and completing assignments related to it during the first month of school and will need access to the written text in class (for selecting quotes etc.) -- please keep this in mind if you choose to borrow it from a library (due date?) or if you'd like to listen to an audiobook version. Audiobooks are great, but for our purposes they function only as a companion piece to the written text.
At the latest, you must finish all reading by the start of class on Monday, September 14.
Keep in mind that school will already be in full swing by then and that other assignments -- not just for AP Lit but for other classes -- might be due concurrently.
I can't wait to meet you all!
Sincerely,
Dr. Kuzmany
What is the main character like? Does the main character change over the course of the novel? If so, how, and how can you tell? (Adapt this question if there are multiple main characters.)
Which characters besides the protagonist are the most interesting (compelling, memorable, important, annoying,... )? Why?
Who is telling the story? One person? An unnamed narrator? Different people?
How does the story unfold (chronologically, in flashbacks, etc.)?
Which internal or external conflicts do the characters face, and are these conflicts resolved in the end?
Where is the story set? How important is setting to the story? Why?
In what ways does this book relate to your own life and experiences? What did you learn from reading this book about a community, place, time period, issue, or customs unfamiliar to you?
