Raesi Araya Castle at Feleg Daero
ዳ ራእሲ ኣርኣያ ፈለግ ዳዕሮ
Raesi Araya Castle in Feleg Daero stands as a distinguished example of late 19th to early 20th-century Tigrayan aristocratic architecture. Originally commissioned by Raesi Araya and later renovated or rebuilt by Dejazmach Abraha Araya, cousin to Emperor Yohannes IV, the castle reflects the architectural aspirations of regional nobility during Ethiopia’s imperial era—combining fortified design, elite residential planning, and symbolic landscape placement. Perched on elevated terrain just outside Mekelle, the structure offers both defensive advantage and commanding views over its surroundings, while its interior spaces display refined craftsmanship in wood, masonry, and spatial hierarchy.
Amenuel Maego (Debre Medhanit)
Amanuel Maego is a monastic church in Tigray, northern Ethiopia, situated at a site also known as Debre Medhanit(Monastery). The current structure, built in the 1960s, follows traditional Tigrayan architecture, featuring dry-stone masonry walls and a flat hidmo-style timber roof. Though partially destroyed by recent conflict—including artillery damage to the roof and sanctuary—the church remains an important spiritual and architectural landmark. Its elevated position offers clear views toward the historic Nejashi settlement, reinforcing its cultural significance in the wider sacred landscape.
Ch’eleqot (Cheleqot) Holy Trinity (Sillassie) Church
Ch’eleqot (Cheleqot) Holy Trinity Church, located about 17 km northwest of Mekelle, stands as one of Tigray’s finest examples of traditional circular church architecture. Commissioned in 1793 by Ras Wolde Sellassie (1745–1816), the church is renowned for its vibrant fresco paintings by Haleqa Hailu, which depict biblical scenes and royal imagery reflecting the political and spiritual vision of its patron. Constructed using local stone, timber, and earth, the building exemplifies the technical mastery of late-18th-century artisans.
A typical Hidmo house compound in Kwi’en represents the vernacular domestic architecture of the Tigray highlands. Built primarily from locally sourced stone, timber, and earth, the Hidmo structure is characterized by its flat earthen roof supported by heavy wooden beams and round stone walls. The compound usually includes a main living unit, storage spaces, animal enclosures, and open courtyards, reflecting a functional integration of household and agricultural life. Its spatial layout and construction techniques demonstrate deep environmental adaptation, social organization, and continuity of traditional craftsmanship within the rural cultural landscape of northern Ethiopia.

Cultural Heritage Maps
Heritage Maps of Mekelle, Adigrat & Wukro
In 2024, during a graduate seminar at Mekelle University, MSc students created the first digital inventory of the tangible, intangible and natural heritage of their home towns.
The project’s open-access maps provide a foundational snapshot of post-conflict cultural landscapes in Tigray and are intended as starting points for urban planners, local administrations, researchers, NGOs and community groups engaged in heritage-centred recovery and development.

Raw Aerial footage of Dejat Gebresillassie Residence, captured on January 18, 2025 using a DJI Mavic Mini drone. Dejat Gebresillassie Woldesillassie was a prominent chief under Emperor Yohannes, overseeing several major constructions. This residence in Agulae, built in the 1840s-1850s, was one of his key projects. He also played a significant role in supervising the construction of the Emperor’s palace in Agulae. There’s a famous legend that he was scolded for building his house even grander than the Emperor’s palace!
Amanuel Maego (ኣማኑኤል ማዕጎ), Debre Medhanit Monastery (ደብረ መድሓኒት ገዳም) in Negashi
This historic monastery, severely affected during the recent conflict, still awaits restoration. In May 2025, we conducted on-site documentation. The following cinematic footage, captured by drone, offers a visual record of its current condition — a sacred space in need of healing, yet standing with dignity.
Medhané Alem Church – Feleg Da’ïro, Mekelle (እንዳ መድኃኒ ዓለም ቤተክርስትያን፣ ፈለግ ዳዕሮ፣ መቐለ)
The Medhané Alem (Holy Savior) Church is one of the finest surviving examples of Tigrayan ecclesiastical architecture from the 1500s. The current structure was built in 1543 AD and stands on a site with pre-Christian sacred origins, reflecting the long continuity of spiritual traditions in northern Ethiopia.

Arho – The Afar Salt Trade of Northeastern Ethiopia
Many of the Hidmo houses studied in this project were built by people who regularly traveled to Arho (a tough journey into the salt mines), a key route in the historic salt trade route.
This documentary film was directed by Till Trojer, with our research collaborator Tesfahun Haddis involved as a camera operator. The film captures the journey of a camel caravan to the salt plains and the transformation of this centuries-old trade. Through striking visuals and traditional Afar music, it explores the impact of modernization on the communities of the Berahle district.
