The Geoheritage Summer Internship

Participation in the Geoheritage Summer Internship provides students 15-18 years of age, who live in the Keweenaw Bay and Keweenaw Peninsula region, opportunities to develop skills in reading landscapes, local history and heritage, geology, and GIS technology. The internship will take place during two weeks in July, see details below.

Students will receive a $1,000 stipend for participation in the internship.

Note: You must participate in both weeks of the internship and complete all accompanying tasks to receive the stipend.

Geoheritage Field Experience

July 7-11, 2025

During the five-day Geoheritage Field Experience you will be a part of a team of Great Lakes knowledge holders. Together we will visit sites around the Keweenaw region to develop skills in:

geoscience content knowledge
geospatial technology
understanding history, culture, and heritage of our place
listening and communication

During the field experience you will collect and document your experience via photos, audio recordings, drawings, 360 virtual reality images. This information will be used in the second week of the internship in the Geospatial Workshop.

Geospatial Workshop

July 14-18, 2025

Following the Geoheritage Field Experience, you will participate in a five-day Geospatial Workshop. During the workshop you will develop skills in geospatial technologies through the design, creation, and publishing of an ARC GIS StoryMap as a reflection of your time in the field.
