The objective of this platform is to support state DOTs and other public agencies explore the use of life cycle assessment (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)s as a standard practice to inform pavement material and design selection for enhancing sustainable pavement practices and quantify the emissions and impacts of those practices.
Specific objectives of the Community of Scholars is to foster synergy in research and development.
Providing education and training to assist consistent implementation of the Pavement LCA Framework including use of repositories and models.
Coordinating protocols and practices for consistent construction stage data collection, organization and reporting to improve the FHWA LCA Repository hosted by the Fed LCA Commons.
Setting the methodological foundation for developing GWP benchmarks that can support decision-making frameworks and support further development of other FHWA tools such as LCA Pave.
Academics (faculty, graduate students) involved in pavement LCA research and development of life cycle inventories (LCI) for pavement construction
Industries interested in contributing LCI specific to their product or process
LCA Practitioners interested in participating in pavement LCI development through the OpenLCA Collaboration Server.
Agency decision-makers interested in influencing the assumptions that shape pavement LCA models are developed and/or can help with the data collection process.
Anyone with the time and patience to do a deep dive into infrastructure LCA.
The platform expects to foster a consensus community.
