Everything you need for better future and success has already been written. And guess what? All you have to do is go to the library - Henri Frederic Amiel
The MTS Library provides a K-6 program for students as well as full service to the entire MTS community. The mission is to prepare students to become the best learners that they can be and build a lifelong love of reading and learning. The library promotes independent learners who can develop an appreciation and understanding of literature as well as a deep value for books. Students will learn how to locate, identify and select resources and most importantly become independent library users. Students can apply reference and research skills in retrieving information and ideas including electronic databases and Internet sources. Most important the library will teach information literacy which helps prepare students for the challenges of living in an technology-rich society.
The 15,000 book collection includes children’s easy fiction books (picture books), early readers, Fiction, Young Adult books, curriculum-based non-fiction books, biographies, and professional and parenting resource books. Children's books encourage children to use their imaginations, expand their vocabularies and gain a better understanding of themselves and others. It is important for books to reflect the diverse groups of people in the world around them so that children can learn to respect not only their own cultural groups, but also the cultural groups of others.
The teacher-librarian, Lisa Levin, spends time with K-6 students weekly. With grades K-4, she encourages students to check out books and gives library skills instruction. She assists students in finding appropriate reading level books and encourages them to enjoy different reading genres. For grades 4-5, students visit the library for instruction in information literacy, research strategies, literature sharing, book selection, book talks, and effective research.
The hours of operation are 8:00-3:00 Monday thru Friday. Lisa is happy to assist with grade level book lists, reading lists, and always happy to answer any questions. She will work closely and collaborate with teachers across the curriculum.
MTS Library has a very dedicated parent volunteer staff that is an essential aspect of the library’s day-to-day operation. There is also a wonderful Birthday Book Program that enhances literacy and helps to build the collection through donations. Feel free to contact Lisa Levin at llevin@mttam.org
