Writing Development

Stages of Writing Development

As children learn to write, they progress through the stages of preliterate writing, early emergent writing, emergent writing, transitional writing and fluent writing. How fortunate are we to get a front row seat to this progression as our students move from Kindergarten at Orchard Hill to their time as fourth graders at VES, preparing to transition to the middle school. Orchard Hill and Village Elementary teachers are skilled at recognizing where students are currently in the stages of writing development, which helps them to know how to move students forward in their writing development. Teachers use both formal assessments and informal observations to learn about students' current stage of writing development and utilize narrative, information and opinion learning progressions to guide students in their development.
