Welcome to K-4 Literacy

Our Vision

The Montgomery Township K-4 Literacy Curriculum is based on a Responsive Teaching instructional model. The goal of Responsive Teaching is to meet the needs of all learners along a continuum of literacy development, while creating an equitable instructional experience for every learner. At the heart of our literacy program is the workshop model, which provides students the opportunity to observe teacher-modeled reading and writing, share in reading and writing with their teacher and peers, actively engage in independent reading and writing, reflect upon their work, and celebrate and acknowledge developments and accomplishments. Teachers provide explicit instruction through mini-lessons in reading and writing, and students engage in meaningful and authentic literacy experiences each day. Read Aloud, Phonics Instruction, Shared Reading, Individual Student Conferences, Interactive Writing, Student Partnerships, Guided Reading and Strategy Groups all support essential components of literacy, including phonemic awareness, phonics, grammar, comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. Each day we work with intention toward the goal of increasing student independence, agency, and joy surrounding literacy.
