Shared Reading

What is Shared Reading?

Shared reading is a component of balanced literacy, during which teachers and students all have their eyes on the same text, whether it is a big book or a projected text. Shared reading serves as a bridge between phonics work and independent reading; it is the application of decoding strategies and phonics with the scaffolded support of the teacher. During a shared reading lessons, students might work together to decode tricky words, locate words with a particular sound (i.e. words with the short a sound), discuss vocabulary, practice fluency, etc. Teachers act as proficient readers to model reading work, such as looking across the entire word when decoding. Most importantly, students are introduced to favorite characters and stories, such as Mrs. Wishy Washy, the Little Red Hen, Pete the Cat and more!
