Welcome to 7th grade Language Arts with Mr. Pandit!
Greetings, visitor!
My name is Vyom Pandit, and I am excited to be teaching language arts at Montgomery Upper Middle School! I firmly believe that all students can succeed if they give their best effort.
This year, we will explore genres of historical fiction, and dystopian novels, and analyze short stories, poems, and informational texts. Students will practice writing in many different forms from creative writing to analytical essays, while also improving grammar, vocabulary, and discussion skills. Aside from academic achievement, I hope to help each student develop a life-long love of reading and learning.
The 2025-26 LA7 Course Syllabus, found on our Google Classrooms, includes our classroom guidelines and procedures, grading expectations, and other important information. Communication with parents is important to me. Please feel free to contact me regarding any questions or concerns you may have. The best way to reach me is by email at vpandit@mtsd.us. I also post updates and resources on Google Classroom, so students can stay informed about assignments and announcements.
I look forward to having a truly marvelous year!
Respectfully yours,
Mr. Pandit

Course Overview
Writing
Students will frequently write notes and entries to enable them to live like writers.
Students will create fluent and cohesive works in the forms of narrative, informational, literary analysis, compare/contrast essays, and argumentative presentations.
Students will use the writing process to publish written pieces, starting with prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and ending with publishing/celebrating the final product.
Grammar instruction will be a part of our Writing Workshop.
Grammar instruction will be meaningfully infused using the Sadlier, Grammar for Writing, Grade 7 resource.
Practice will be supported using exercises from the book and our writing workshop.
Reading
Students will read, analyze, and respond to independent and whole class short stories, poems, short videos, and novels.
Students will write about their reading using a notebook for crafting their responses and reactions. This work will further their analytical thinking and ability to discuss their reading with more depth.
Students will have partnership, small group and whole class discussions to further enhance their reading experience and gain a deeper understanding of an author’s purpose for writing.
Students will study literary elements and devices to better analyze a variety of texts and genres.
Vocabulary will be a part of our reading work, both within shared texts and PCR novels.
Students will use Vocabulary.com and additional relevant resources to enhance their reading comprehension and writing capacities.
Students will engage in genre-based units of study throughout the year.

Historical Fiction
Non-Fiction
Dystopian (Science Fiction)
Poetry - novels written in poetic form
Personal Choice Reading (PCR)
Students will independently read books of their choice.
Students will choose books that are within the specific genre being studied in class. Teachers will conference with students about choosing books that are at an appropriate level (see PCR expectations given to your child).
Students will be writing and thinking about their reading using a composition notebook.
