Special Roundtable:

Post-Colonialism, Reconciliation, and Liberal Education

Canada's colonial past and its ongoing dynamics with Indigenous communities challenge the application of a straightforward post-colonial framework as it has been formulated with reference to former colonies such as India or Algeria. Moreover, the migration of people from formerly colonized societies is having transforming effects upon Canadian society and culture. This panel proposes a critical examination of Canada's position within post-colonial discourse, highlighting the implications for liberal education at the post-secondary level and clarifying the distinction between post-colonialism and decolonization.

The panel will consider how liberal education might be reimagined so as to contribute to the decolonization process, fostering an understanding of Indigenous rights and cultures, while at the same time contemplating Canada’s increasing cultural diversity. This inquiry aligns with the wider objectives of liberal education to broaden students' intellectual and ethical horizons, suggesting the necessity of integrating a critical examination of colonial history and its contemporary implications.

This panel will foster a multidisciplinary dialogue that contributes to academic debates, informs policy, pedagogy, and public understanding, and illuminates paths toward genuine decolonization and reconciliation.
