How to writing is a fun way to make writing hands-on at home. Depending on the age and confidence of your child as a writer, you can use this resource to encourage your child to write. Look at the exemplar of the 'Jam Sandwich How To'. Talk about the parts of the writing like the list, pictures, words and, for some children, you may be able to discuss and find the bossy verbs like put, spread, get and place. Most 'how to' pieces of writing have bossy verbs. They will need to use some when they write their own 'how to'. If you have a printer you are welcome to print these templates, but you don't have to - just use a blank page or an old book . Most children need the lines as a guide, so you can rule some for them. Help your child hear the sounds in the words and know that it is okay for early writers to get help with their sounding out and recording sounds. At some stage, you may even have to take over the writing for them for a period. Just encourage them to do a little more themselves each day.
Making booklets all about topics they know a lot about is a great way to engage children in writing. Simply fold together blank paper and staple (if you can, but tying together with string or ribbon or just folding is fine too).
