What is the STEM Academy?
Students:
Do you like Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)?
Want to learn about careers in STEM?
Want to have opportunities to participate in STEM-career activities while at the high school?
Join the STEM Academy! There are three levels of participation depending on the interest of the student.
Level 1: Interested in taking some STEM elective courses only.
Students at Level 1 take advantage of the wide variety of STEM electives offered at Mt. Lebanon High School.
How do you Join at Level 1? See your school counselor to schedule your classes to include STEM electives.
Level 2: Interested in taking STEM courses and participating in some external opportunities.
Students at Level 2 are not required to take any specific STEM courses and are not required to submit any work to the STEM Academy Director. There are no obligations. No indication of the STEM Academy is placed on the students’ transcripts; however, the students may place the STEM Academy and related activities on their resumes if they are active participants.
Students who enroll at Level 2 will be invited to Join the STEM Academy ALL Students Schoology Course to be informed of STEM career-related activities both within and outside the district including: STEM Career Opportunities Outside of School, Speakers in School, Field Trips, Contests and Competitions and Scholarships, Summer Opportunities, Videos, and Articles and Websites.
Intention to participate at Level 2 may be declared at any time during high school. A student at Level 2 may move to Level 3 at any time before December 1st of their Junior year.
How do you Join at Level 2? Join the STEM Academy ALL Students Schoology Course
Level 3: Interested in full participation in the STEM Academy.
Level 3 students must maintain an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher. Either the Technology path or Biological Sciences path will be chosen. Commitment for this level must be done by December 1st of Junior year.
Students who enroll at Level 3 will be invited to Join the STEM Academy ALL Students Schoology Course to be informed of STEM career-related activities both within and outside the district including: STEM Career Opportunities Outside of School, Speakers in School, Field Trips, Contests and Competitions and Scholarships, Summer Opportunities, Videos, and Articles and Websites.
Level 3 students will also do the following during their Junior and Senior years:
Take all required courses for the chosen path (Technology or Biological Sciences) – over a span of 4 years
STEM Career Independent Study – Before December 1st, during Junior Year
½-Day Shadowing Experience – Junior Year
8 STEM Career Activities to learn about STEM careers – Over a 2-year span of Junior and Senior Years
Full-Day, In-Depth STEM Experience – Senior Year
Students who participate in Level 3 will have it denoted on their transcripts at the beginning of their senior year that they are pursuing Level 3 certification. Those who fulfill all the requirements will have recognition of this certification placed on their transcript in May of their Senior year with an explanation of the STEM Academy. The students may place the STEM Academy and any related activities on their resumes.
How do you Join at Level 3? If it is before December 1st of your Junior year, do the following:
Join the STEM Academy ALL Students Schoology Course (Students only)
Email STEM@mtlsd.net with your name and graduation year, telling Mrs. Meer that you are interested in joining Level 3.
Make an appointment to meet with Mrs. Meer in C423 to talk about the Level 3 requirements and to get started.
See your Guidance Counselor to examine your coursework for either the Technology or Biological Sciences Path.

STEM Academy Career Connections
Mt. Lebanon Residents in STEM Careers - Are you interested in providing opportunities for Mt. Lebanon High School students who are involved in Level 3 of the Mt. Lebanon High School STEM Academy to shadow you in your career? Level 3 participants are required to spend 3 or more hours with a professional, learning about a specific career. Please complete this form if your employer would permit you to have a Mt. Lebanon High School student visit you during your work day at your place of employment.
