Equations and Inequalities
Unit Description:
In this unit, students simplify algebraic expressions and write and solve both one-step, two-step, and multi-step equations. Students will also learn to write, solve and graph inequalities.
In a previous unit, students learned to perform operations with integers, use the order of operations and understand the properties of numbers. Drawing on this knowledge, the students will learn the “zig-zag” method as well as the algebraic method to undo inverse operations to solve equations.
Big Ideas:
- A solution is the number that makes an equation true.
- The order of operations and the properties of numbers help them to solve equations.
- Finding a solution is the process of “unwrapping” the unknown variable, using inverse operations.
- The graph of an inequality contains an infinite number of points.

- How are inverse operations used to “undo” an equation?
- Why are algebraic rules useful?
- How are equations and inequalities used to describe and solve multi-step problems?
