Science is fun and exciting, but a lot of the work you will do in your classes and in faculty research labs involves working with equipment, chemicals, and samples that need to be treated with respect in order to keep yourself and your coworkers safe. The first and most important safety rule is to trust your gut; if you feel unsafe for any reason, stop what you are doing and ask for help from a faculty member or Science Center staff.
More detailed information about specific policies on Laboratory Safety can be found in Science Center Safety Handbook. Lori Smith, the Director of Environmental Health and Safety on campus, is also a valuable resource. Although she doesn't work in the Science Center, she can always be reached by email.
