Primarily used as a neuronal stain, serving as a crucial part of the Nissl stain (named after German scientist Franz Nissl). The way cresyl violet stains neurons is by staining nissl bodies in particular. Nissl bodies are organelles located within neurons responsible for protein synthesis and the distribution of gray matter. In this way, by staining nissl bodies, you effectively stain the vast majority of a neuron.
There are no indications of any hazards associated with the use of cressyl violet. However, reasonable caution is still strongly recommended.
Luxol Fast Blue (FSB) stains the myelin of neurons blue, and is particularly good at staining thick axons. FSB is often used for diagnostics in neuroscience.
FSB is highly flammable, a serious eye irritant, and specific organ toxin for the eyes and central nervous system. PPE should include goggles, gloves, protective clothing, a mask, and potentially a face shield.
