Precious Plastic is a global, open-source project that provides tools and guidance on creating local, small-scale recycling shops to process and manufacture new products. Precious Plastic aims to provide a global solution to the plastic waste problem. They offer machine plans, product designs, knowledge of plastic and the industry, business models, and a full ecosystem that can be adopted by anyone who wants to take the problem into their own hands. Precious Plastic MHC is one of the many locations worldwide doing just that!

People, groups and organizations create recycling spaces to contribute the mission of Precious Plastic. Spaces are connected and dependent on each other, collaborating to tackle the plastic problem. There are five different types of spaces:
Precious Plastic Workspace: A Precious Plastic workspace transforms plastic from waste into valuable raw materials or products. There are five workspaces: Shredder, Extrusion, Sheetpress, Injection, and Mix.
Collection Point: Collection Points gather plastic from neighbors, organizations, and businesses to be processed by local Shredder Workspaces.
Community Point: Community Points connect and grow the local recycling network. Strengthening the existing community while involving more and more people.
Machine Shop: Machine Shops produce and build parts, machines, and molds for others in the local recycling network.
Member: Precious Plastic members are the ones who fuel the recycling network by helping with plastic collection, spreading the word, purchasing recycled plastic products, and supporting in other ways.
Precious Plastic MHC combines Precious Plastic Workspace, a Collection Point, and Member spaces. At Precious Plastic MHC, we collect plastic from our campus dining hall, shred and inject the plastic in the Fimbel Lab, all while educating our community about the importance of reducing our plastic use while demonstrating our solution through a closed-loop sustainable way of recycling plastic within the Mount Holyoke campus.
