PROMPT: You'll each give a 90-second "elevator pitch" to the class on Tuesday 10/1. After the pitch, a subset of your peers will provide feedback through a Google form to provide other perspectives on the project. This will be an opportunity to engage in giving and receiving feedback effectively.
To help you prepare your elevator pitch, here is a template adapted from Steven Schmeiser. It is framed for pitching a product to seek investment capital, so you'll want to adjust the framing with this in mind:
Written on September 28, 2024 (for in-class: Tuesday 10/1):
COMPANY - who are you? this can help us understand your "backstory" and contextualize your project
I am Ireland Young and I am a senior at Mount Holyoke College. I am making a helmet based on a dragonfish—a creepy little fish that uses bioluminescent light to hunt in the deep
NEED - what does your project seek to provide to its user?
This helmet will provide everything you need to look scary: big teeth, black scales, blinking lights, and even a red light around its eyes. Because dragonfish are the only type of fish that can produce infrared. But this time, your prey can see the light, and they look terrified.
SOLUTION - how does your project address the need? / MARKET - who do you imagine will be interacting with the project?
These elements make the dragonfish perfect for Halloween and anyone who wants to scare their friends or win a costume party.
BUSINESS MODEL - optional for this course context
EXIT - optional for this course context
PEOPLE - who will you pull in to help design, build and/or test your project?
THE ASK - are there resources beyond the supplies already provided in the course that you'll need for the project?
The helmet will be made of repurposed materials, such as several old bike helmets, scraps of foam, and plastic or cardboard. I will use a CPX and several LEDs to create the bioluminescence and a hinge-able jaw that will create the scare factor. I’ll use the laser cutter to create cardboard test-jaws, Makecode to create the code, and I have already started making it, and all I need are a few more materials and tools in the Makerspace.
