building resilience
Monday, December 6 on zoom
Evidence shows that resilience, the ability to recover quickly from challenges, is a strong indicator of a learner’s success in a given field.
You can tap into and further build your resilience to help you persist, whether learning computer science or navigating a career pathway in tech.
After the video, take a minute or so to reflect on what resonated with you. Please write a response to share in the chat, but do not hit return until prompted!
What is a takeaway you will bring away from this course?
Something I will take away from this course is more confidence in my ability to work in stem. I’ve never been a stem person or really interested in computer science (mostly bc I didn’t think I was capable of doing it) but I have changed how I see cs and my position in the field. I feel much more able to participate in a stem/cs class because I was a part of this class.
I think one of the biggest takeaways is feeling more confident in my ability to complete a project from the beginning stages all the way to completion. The course has been pretty challenging, but it's helpful for actually being able to put into practice all the skills that the videos have been talking about. out of necessity.
Things don't always go as planned, and that is completely okay. This does not mean you have to give up on the plan entirely. It just means that you should adapt the plan and be accepting of your own limitations and ask for help whenever needed. But, if they do end up going according to the plan (or the adapted plan), make a happy reflection video and give yourself the time to celebrate the little victory! :)
Even though it might not seem like the most productive use of time compared to just "working on it" at first, stepping back and planning how to tackle a challenge is crucial for making sure that you do good work that pushes you further towards your goal.
From this course, I learned about how the first step to doing the project is really important. because the first step is the most difficult to start on for me, esp when I am doubting about whether or not I can actually manage it. And I also learned to break down the project or the homework and create small deadlines for myself, so that I don't end up doing everything last minute.
I guess is to keep on learning and don’t be afraid of stepping out of comfort zone, trying new things which seems to be really difficult. After we tried them, it would make us feel that it’s a task that we cannot do. Thank you so much for teaching us this amazing courses!
One takeaway that I will carry from this course is the strong understanding that I have the potential to do hard things. Throughout my academic trajectory at Mount Holyoke College, I have diminished my potential and passions in comparison with others; I have learned that this is highly unproductive, and instead of focusing outwards, it is much more productive to focus inwards. Exercising my emotional intelligence, my learned resilience, and acquisition of self-regulated learning will only further my confidence and therefore my progress.
Something I'm really going to take away from the course is the importance of collaboration and getting a different perspective when working on projects/ideas. Having an outside perspective allows for different ideas and things you may not have thought of to be brought up in a way that will allow you to improve, if the feedback is done right.
I will be able to label the internal processes that I previously might have been tangentally aware of, but that I did not pay too much attention to. Additionally, my self-efficacy has increased-- I have noticed this outside of class, how when entering new activities, or doing things I haven't in a while, I am a lot calmer and accepting of my status as a beginner. In fact, I have learnt the beauty in being at this skill level, and internalized the calming idea that I *don't* have to have it all perfect or figured out, and that those with more experience are not going to look down on me, but rather help me and support me.
The one take away for me from the class would be try to be more strategic and always reflect on what I did. I learnt that it’s ok to fail, and what important is the process and what I have gained through the process
one takeaway I have from this course is that even for STEM subjects/cs classes, you can be a little flexible with the way you do things. if something doesn't work out, it's ok to change it and maybe give yourself less work to do. also, the most important things for my learning are self-regulated learning and having a growth mindset
When I look back and see my projects and works in the course, I feel confident about myself going throughout the process of dealing with something new every week. I used to think myself less capable, but this course helped me to learn about learning and recognition of own capabilities!
Those definitions are so common in our daily life but I didn’t notice before, and I really learned a lot of how these terms affect my action and how I can get things better
