After making this simple circuit above, I had to integrate all that I learned about Self-efficacy and having a growth mindset so I came up with this project.
A CIRCUIT STORY: THE UPS AND DOWNS
My first success was when I was able to illuminate the first two LEDs without encountering issues. I then started encountering failures after the third LED, which would not come on for some reason I got to know a day after, the positive side of the LED was not firmly on the paper so was not receiving current from the copper wire.
My second success was when the fourth LED lit up even though the third one was refusing to(my first failure). I then resolved to use an additional battery which made it more complicated resulting in my second failure. In the process of adding the second battery, other LEDs refused to turn on too as a result of the complex copper wire situation I found myself in.
Frustrated and at the point of giving up, I checked the TA hours and came the next day to see Jenny who identified my mistake of the third copper wire not being firm enough on the paper to receive current.
The picture below is the outline of how I wanted my project to look.
Reflecting on my circuit project, I embarked on this endeavor with a growth mindset, a concept I've diligently learned in class. Drawing from past experiences, particularly from an art class where I explored paper crafts and middle school physics classes where I got familiar with circuits, I felt confident that this project fell well within my comfort zone. However, as I encountered obstacles—particularly when the LEDs failed to light up—I found myself fighting with self-doubt.
It was in this moment of uncertainty that I remembered the lessons on self-efficacy. Acknowledging my doubts, I sought assistance during TA hours. There, with guidance and encouragement from Jenny, I regained my self-efficacy. Her reassurance that my efforts were great, coupled with her own experiences of overcoming similar challenges, reignited my belief in my paper circuits being i my comfort zone.
Reflecting further on my academic and extracurricular journey, I recognize instances where my mindset and self-efficacy influenced my choices. For instance, despite my interest in joining the Model UN club, I allowed my fixed mindset to dissuade me, convincing myself that I lacked the prowess for public speaking. Consequently, I abstained from attending meetings, missing out on valuable opportunities for growth and engagement.
Looking back, I would advise my former self to confront those doubts head-on, recognizing that with dedication and focus, I am capable of taking on any challenge—even those that initially seem out of my comfort zone.
To conclude, my experiences with the circuit project and the Model UN club supports the importance of mindset and self-efficacy in shaping one's academic and personal journey. By fostering a growth mindset and believing in my abilities, I can navigate challenges with resilience and confidence, ultimately unlocking my full potential.
