Learning updates

Foundation Stage Foundation Stage children have been learning to answer retrieval questions from the story Funnybones using pictures and true or false statements. They are really starting to use their phonics to read words and help them develop their reading skills.

Key Stage One This week, KS1 have been doing daily activities as part of Anti-bullying week. We have listened to a song from the BBC, followed a group dance about standing together and celebrated our differences through wearing and designing odd socks! We have also been to the library in Metheringham and loved sharing a story with one of the super members of Metheringham Library team about a goose migrating south for the Winter. We chose and brought lots of super books back to school to enjoy over the next 4 weeks in school.

Lower Key Stage Two This week in year 3 and 4 we have been reporting on the goings on that took place over Halloween.  Reporters have been interviewing shaken teachers and confused pupils on the events of that harrowing day.  Newspapers are currently in print with tales of horror and mystery.  In Maths year 3 have been using their number knowledge to make reasonable estimations of tricky sums.  Whilst Year 4 have been busy practising their 3, 6, and 9 multiplications. The children (and teachers) have been enjoying dodgeball and dance this week, showing their sequencing skills and team work to create moves to the 'Greatest showman'.  On Thursday the children became scientists, learning about friction and forces to conduct an experiment which led them to discover which material created the least friction against a moving object. Finally, we were all ready and excited for Children in Need day!

Upper Key Stage Two UKS2 have a special article for this week's newsletter; the children of Year 5 and 6 are going to recount the best bits of their week:

In PE, I have loved playing Dodgeball and learning the different skills and tricks taught by Mr Steed.  Leo

In Maths this week, we have been learning to subtract from a mixed number and I have really enjoyed it. Joseph

I enjoy our music lessons, because it's fun to sing and to perform to people. Lacy

In PE, I have enjoyed doing different dance moves using the theme of recycling. It's fun being an Eco-Warrior!.  Josh

I enjoyed learning different maths skills. We have been subtracting from a mixed number; it was hard but then I made my Dad do it and he had no clue!  Gabriella

In Science, while learning about Properties and Changes of Materials, I have enjoyed seeing which materials would dissolve - it was very fascinating!  Alfie

I enjoy English. I have liked how we are learning about bullying. At the moment, we are learning about persuasive language. It is really fun. The learning has inspired me to be a buddy, not a bully. Evelyn

In PE, we have been doing Dance. In dance, I have really enjoyed making different tricks and skills. My group is resilient and determined, which encourages us to try our best to make the best routine we can. Annabelle

Well, there you have it. The children's week, in their words. Pupil voice at it's best!

meet the chair of governors

Hello!

I am Helen Whitehouse, Chair of Governors at Metheringham Primary School.

I have been a governor for over 18 years, and Chair of Governors for more than 12. My background is in teaching; I have taught in both secondary and middle schools, including at a Service school in Germany. I first became a governor when my children were at the school, first serving as a parent governor and later becoming the local authority governor. I am absolutely passionate about education and getting the best possible outcomes for all the children in our community. I am supported by a fantastic team of governors who bring a wide range of skills and expertise from their professional lives to benefit the school. We are all unpaid volunteers who are totally committed to Metheringham Primary School.

It has been a busy start to the school year attending meetings with the head teacher, staff, governors and our LA locality lead. Learning walks, training, checks by governors with responsibility for safeguarding, SEND and finance have also been completed. One of my favourite aspects of the role is talking to the children, sharing their learning and listening to their views. We had the chance to do this as part of our recent Maths monitoring. I valued the opportunity to meet with parents at the Maths open morning and look forward to meeting more of you throughout the year.

It is a privilege to be part of Team Green and to work with our fabulous staffing team; we are incredibly fortunate to have such caring and dedicated staff.

Next week, I will be sending out a parent survey for completion. We would appreciate as many responses as possible to support us in celebrating our lovely school, and to help us in working towards school improvements in the future. Thank you.

Spelling Shed

Every child from Year 2 upwards has a Spelling Shed account which can be accessed in school or at home via the website Spelling Shed

Here are the latest scores on the whole-school leader board (these scores are based on their total score from the last 7 days):

Another fantastic week! We love Spelling Shed :-)

Are you struggling with your child’s behaviour at difficult times like bedtime or before school? Or perhaps you feel that routines have taken over your life and your child can’t cope with changes?

We’ll be talking about creating routines for your child, tips to help with tricky times of day, like before school or bedtime, and how to support them when their routine has to change unexpectedly. This class is particularly suited for parents/ carers of children aged 3-12, although everyone is welcome to join us.

Book your free space to join our experienced trainer Gary, and if you have any questions email them to info@myfamilycoach.com to make sure we can answer them on the night. We can’t wait to see you there!

Not sure you can make it? Please register your space and we’ll send everyone a recording of the class along with any other useful information shared in the session.

sports crew

Here at Metheringham Primary we have been busy with all things sporty. We have been lucky enough to secure sponsorship for our new football kit.  Thank you to Branston Potatoes for your sponsorship; our new kit is amazing!  The team looked professional during their inaugural match in the Sleaford and District League against Brant Broughton. The team played with enthusiasm and passion showing sportsmanship throughout the game.   We have also hosted a home game against Horbling Primary which was another close game.

Our school has secured funding to develop our netball courts over the half term holiday.  We now have permanent netball posts in the Key Stage 2 playground.  We are waiting for a period of dry weather for the new markings to be painted.  Our netball team practises each Tuesday lunchtime and are looking forward to representing the school in the near future.

As part of our Children in Need fund raising, Miss Pearson has been running a Tapathon club.  The participants have been learning a tap routine and they will take part in a national Tapathon on Sunday 18th November.

Recently, we have also had the opportunity to experience a Drumba session.  A group of coaches came over from Nottingham and delivered Drumba sessions to every class.  This is an active dance session whilst drumming.  It was so much fun!  Even the staff had a go.  As a school, we are hoping to invest in our own Drumba set so that this can become part of our PE lessons.

English Open Morning

Parents and carers are welcome in school on Wednesday 22nd November from 9:15-10:00. This session will allow you to take part in English learning with your child. This will be a similar format to Maths Morning.

Foms winter disco

Football

This week, our Year 5/6 team took to the pitch again to take on Horbling Browns. It was windy and cold but we were ready and raring to kick off.

We took an early lead with an amazing 'curl in' from a corner kick. The team will agree that this was a fantastic goal and it really got everyone thirsty for more.

More incredible goals came from both sides, including a fantastic strike from Liepa. Horbling Brown came out on top with a 3-2 victory. Team Green spirit and passion was on display throughout and in the team chat over biscuits and juice afterwards.

Well done, Team Green. It was a pleasure to cheer you on.

Covid-19 vaccination uptake

Please could we make you aware of the COVID-19 vaccination programme for young people. Currently, we are seeing a low uptake in ages 5-17 within Lincolnshire. Eligibility is all children in a clinical risk group, any child over 12 who is a household contact of someone with immuno-suppression and anyone over 16 who is a carer.

Parents can book by calling 119, or on the national booking system. Certain geographical areas can also use the outreach services or call 01522 301940.

Christmas Preparations

Preparations are in full swing for the most wonderful time of the year, Christmas! Our youngest pupils have started their nativity practice. Mrs Evans and Mrs Weston are busy organising the delivery of festive treats and this year's christmas tree. The staff, FOMS and pupils are busy organising crafts, games, songs and much more for our annual Christmas Fayre.

FOMS are asking parents and anyone in the community to make donations of raffle prizes if they are able to. Please spread this message far and wide and hopefully we will have lots of goodies to win on the day.

Thank you
