Lower Key Stage Two We were delighted to take part in the National Literacy Trustās reading event, where we joined thousands of children in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most children reading at the same time. We even had the opportunity to draw along with the illustrator, following their tips to create our very own unicorns in our āhappy placesā ā the results were fantastic!
In Maths, we have been perfecting our rounding skills, rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. We have also begun exploring addition and subtraction, building on our understanding and developing our confidence with different methods.
In English, we have started our shared writes and are thinking carefully about how we can innovate and put our own creative spin on our core text. For whole class reading we have thoroughly enjoyed exploring fairy tales further, particularly comparing traditional versions with more modern adaptations. It was wonderful to see everyoneās dramatic adaptations of Little Red Riding Hood. We certainly have some budding actors in our midst! Their creativity, confidence and enthusiasm were fantastic to see.
What a wonderful week of learning, creativity and fun! We are very proud of all the children and the enthusiasm they continue to show.
Upper Key Stage Two It has been another fantastic week in UKS2, with the children throwing themselves into their learning with enthusiasm and curiosity! History ā Crime and Punishment. In History, we have travelled back in time to the Anglo-Saxon and Viking period to explore what crime and punishment looked like over 1,000 years ago. The children have been fascinated to discover how people were punished for breaking the law and how very different the justice system was compared with today. We have been comparing punishments, discussing whether they were fair and thinking about how ideas about justice have changed over time. Maths ā Multiples and Factors Our mathematicians have been working hard on multiples, common multiples and factors. The children have been developing their reasoning skills and learning to spot patterns and relationships between numbers. There has certainly been plenty of mathematical thinking going on in the classrooms! We also enjoyed taking part in the Black Heroes of Mathematics Youth Festival KS2, celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black mathematicians and inspiring the children to see the many different possibilities within the world of mathematics. Reading ā Little People, Big Dreams Our reading comprehension work this week focused on Rosa Parks, from the Little People, Big Dreams series. The children explored her life and the important role she played in the Civil Rights Movement, developing their retrieval, inference and vocabulary skills along the way. It provided some wonderful opportunities for discussion about equality, courage and standing up for what is right. Take 10 to Read ā A Record-Breaking Week! The Woodpeckers joined children across the country for Go All In for Take 10 to Read, taking part in an incredible reading event aiming to set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS⢠title! It was wonderful to see the children joining in and celebrating the simple pleasure of stopping, taking a breath and getting lost in a good book. We also had the fantastic opportunity to listen to Frank Cottrell-Boyce reading from The Blockbusters! and exploring themes including cinema and culture. What a brilliant way to inspire our young readers and remind us all just how exciting stories can be! Ā
