Foundation Stage Foundation Stage had a fantastic time visiting Metheringham train station. We saw three trains, sang some train songs, looked for key signs and even drew a steam train.
Key Stage One This week in KS1 we have been very busy and creative! We have used our computing skills to create certificates in History, inspired by Amy Johnson's Cup for Courage. We have also continued exploring watercolours in art, taking inspiration from local watercolour artist Anne Barnham. The children have loved experimenting with colour and creativity. In science, our minibeast microhabitats are looking absolutely fantastic! To celebrate National Storytelling Week, we shared our Talk for Writing story maps in assembly. The children showed great courage and proudly as retold their stories in front of their peers.
Lower Key Stage Two In LKS2 we are really enjoying writing our own stories. It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm and motivation our pupils have for their writing. We can't wait to read them when they are all finished. In computing, we have been learning how to make short stop motion animations. The children have created storyboards and backgrounds, and have created a first draft of their short stories. Motivation and engagement were high and there is a lot of excitement for the editing session next week. In history, we have been learning about the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings. The children loved acting out a scene between King Guthrum and King Alfred the Great. There were smiles all round as children used hot seating and questioning to demonstrate their historical understanding. Well done Year 3 and 4.
Upper Key Stage Two Upper Key Stage 2 have had another busy week. We launched our Talk for Writing poetry unit with “What Is” by Christina Rossetti, exploring poetic devices with a particular focus on metaphors. In maths, algebra and long multiplication have proved challenging but very rewarding as our confidence has grown. Our history learning continues to be full of intrigue as we explore the magical Maya civilisation and compare it with life in Britain during the same period. In French, we have been learning how to order food and drink in a café, including using please, thank you and I would like. In PSHE, we explored stereotypes in the workplace, which illustrated how knowledgeable and broadminded our Team Green children are. We are looking forward to our final week before half term and taking part in Children’s Mental Health Week. Thank you for your ongoing support with homework, and we encourage you to continue helping your child develop strong, positive habits at home.

Just a reminder that it is Children's Mental Health next week. Our wonderful Happy and Healthy Ambassadors have been busy planning a super week to incorporate extra activities across the school. The theme this year is: This is my place- Belonging.

On Friday 13th February, we will be having a non-uniform day where the children are encouraged to wear their favourite outfit. Please ensure that what they pick to wear is safe and suitable for school. If you are able to, we will be collecting donations via ParentPay for the Pets as Therapy Charity. We have been working with the Pets as Therapy Charity for 18 months. We love welcoming Tanya into school to support the wellbeing of our young people.
This week, a few of our school governors attended the school’s weekly School Council meeting. The councilors confidently showcased how their meetings are run and the types of issues they discuss on behalf of their peers. In true School Council style, they even put the governors on the spot with their own questions – including how the council could be more helpful to them. It was a fantastic demonstration of democracy in action and the power of child voice.
The Eco-Committee started their second mission this week. They want to find out about food waste and how reducing it could make the planet a better place.
They interviewed the lunchtime staff and found that we do have a problem with food waste at Metheringham. The bags of waste were very heavy and were mixed with packaging, which added to the problem.
They watched a video about the energy it takes to grow, pick, transport, buy and deliver food to our plates. Some of this is simply thrown away — what a waste!

Letters regarding parent teacher consultations went home this week. They must be returned by Monday to indicate your preferred date and time slot. Teachers will send home appointment slips on Thursday 12th February for the following preferred dates:

The JRSOs met this week to give their feedback to Mrs Wilcox after gathering pupil voice. We can report that our children feel like drivers outside school do not observe the speed limits. Also, some said their adults don't always encourage seatbelts! They also think that a sign outside school with messages to remind other road users that everyone needs to take care would be useful. Their assembly preparation for next term is now well underway and our JRSOs have suggested that their competition is to design a sign for this purpose.
