 Learning Updates

Foundation Stage Children in Reception have been learning about a famous artist called Claude Monet. We have begun the first stage of recreating his artwork by using tape to make a bridge. We will then be using brush strokes, just like the artist, to create a lily pad piece of art as part of our minibeast topic.

Key Stage One  This week, our learning has focused on the book, “The Giving Tree”.  It is a super book about friendship and comes highly recommended for all ages – even adults!  We have been using conjunctions to improve our writing and extend our sentences.  All the teachers have been very impressed with our super writing. In PE, we have been practising our sports day races and using drivers in tri-golf to hit the ball towards a target.  It has been nice to play golf in the sunshine for a change!

Lower Key Stage Two Year 3 and 4 wasted no time in getting to grips with the seconds, minutes and hours as they clocked some great progress in maths. Some of our year 4's have been left divided by the bus stop method, but they are in capable HANDS! We have been tasked to learn as much about the Roman invasion as possible and why they invaded Britain? We've also been resolving conflict in PSHE this week, smiles all round in LKS2. You can count on us to be experts in women's history as we've read about Sacagawea, Jane Austen and Mary Anning, digging up as much information as we can.

Upper Key Stage Two After a weekend of Coronation fun, Year 6 returned to school on Tuesday to their Key Stage 2 SATs tests.  They were really positive and spurred on by breakfast with their friends in school each morning.  We have been impressed with their hard work, determination and resilience; a sure sign that our Metheringham school values are embedded.

With SATs this week, Year 5 have had a glimpse into the future with Mrs Wilcox and Mrs Smith-Wood's class seeing their Year 6 counterparts away from the classroom for most of the mornings.  They have 'published' their Jumanji stories and are looking forward to seeing whose final version will be chosen for the English curriculum display.  In maths, they have practised areas of the curriculum they feel they need to brush up on, whilst challenging themselves with some preparation for Year 6 arithmetic with our Arithmagician's daily challenge!  Year 5/6 have been travelling back into the dim and distant past as they gain greater knowledge of the Ancient Egyptians and where they fit into the historical timeline.   They had to really get their 'thinking caps' on to grapple with the understanding on how the dates work in BC/AD BCE/CE!

attendance

32 pupils have maintained 100% attendance so far this academic year.

Current whole school attendance is 95.11%.

Our attendance figures for week 2 and week 3 of term 5 were as follows:

Well done to Miss Tucker's Class for a significant improvement between the two weeks. 100% earns you an extra playtime!

During the last school week, we had 12_incidences of lateness. This is a great improvement :-)

Please be reminded that doors open at 8:45 and registration is at 9:00. This gives you 15 minutes to be early and have a calm start to the day.

Meet the team

Meet Mr Stenner

Hello everyone,

My name is Andy Stenner. I joined Metheringham Primary School in November 2021 as School Caretaker. My main roles are opening up the school in the morning and locking up in the evening. I also ensure the school runs smoothly, for example, turning on heating and lighting.

I live locally in the village and have done for nearly 30 years. I have two children – a daughter who is 25 and a son who is 17. My wife of 30 years also works at the school as a lunch time assistant.

In my spare time, I like to keep myself busy by playing pool for one of the local pub teams and going to Kinema in the Woods.

I am sure you will see me around the village at some point. Bye for now.

Wednesday 24th May- Sports Day

King's Coronation celebrations

On Friday 5th May, the whole school turned red, white and blue in honour of King Charles and his coronation. The children celebrated in style with songs, poems, doughnuts, crafts and fancy lunches. Memories were made that will last forever. We hope you all enjoyed the weekend celebrations. Mrs Duggin enjoyed the parade, street party and a lovely ice-cream in Metheringham Village over the bank holiday. It was a great community event...and the weather wasn't bad either!

SATS

We are always incredibly proud of our pupils but this week the Year 6 pupils have blown us away. They have displayed so many of our school values, applied all of their knowledge and skills and shown us exactly what they are capable of in their KS2 SATS assessments. Their determination, hard work and commitment to make themselves and the school shine has truly made us all so very proud.

We have also been surprised by the weird, whacky and revolting combinations of spreads added to toast in their SATS breakfast club!

A huge well done and round of applause goes to you all. An assessment paper and a grade could never equate to the wonderful children you are-inside and out!

Year 2 SATS will take place next week and we're sure they will also give it all they've got!

Swimming

We are so very pleased to announce that we have secured the swimming pool, a swimming coach and a lifeguard so that swimming sessions can go ahead in school in Term 6. This year, the school are able to fully fund this for all pupils and therefore there will be no cost to parents. We are so lucky to have such an amazing facility on our doorstep.

A timetable and more details will be sent to parents in the next few weeks.

Transition

Growing up

In term 6, all year groups will cover the topic 'growing up' as part of their Relationships and Health Education (RHE) learning.

When our RHE curriculum was designed in 2020, we consulted with parents. However, it is important that we continue to share information in this area with families.

Class teachers will post letters to parents and carers via Seesaw to give a summary of topic areas covered by each year group. These letters can also be found on our website with other information about our RHE and PSHE curriculum and policies:
