Learning Updates

Foundation Stage Children in Reception have been exploring a part, part, whole method in Maths this week using vehicles. They have learnt that numbers are made up of smaller numbers and that these can be added together to make a whole number.

Key Stage One We have had another great week in KS1. We have been enjoying skills in pop-lacrosse PE lessons, this week we have been learning how to pick up the ball by rolling it back and scooping it up using the nets. We are also really enjoying our topic 'China' this term and have learnt lots of different facts to use in our writing. In Geography we explored the weather in China, we drew symbols on maps to show the weather in summer and winter!

Lower Key Stage Two This week, LKS2 have transformed into actors and actresses! Not only have we continued to rehearse our Easter play, Cinderella, but we have also been learning about the features of a playscript and have been inspired by the book and film, Matilda by Roald Dahl. In Science, we started a new topic about animals and humans. We now understand what nutrients humans and animals need to keep their bodies healthy and how this can change depending on whether you are a carnivore, omnivore or herbivore. In gymnastics, we are starting to link our learning of different movements, leaps, rolls and balances to form a sequence. In music, Year 4 have become really respectful rappers! Whereas Year 3 have dabbled in a bit of reggae, with the legendary Bob Marley.

Upper Key Stage Two This week, we have written persuasive letters, based on the book stimulus ‘Varmints’, as well as look at how to use these persuasive techniques to create a powerful, emotive speech. In computing, we have been looking at physical computing. It was great fun!! It included how we can program a light to flash different colours, as well as how we can include a motor to move with lights to create a dancing man. In maths, year 5 have started to look at fractions, recapping on what we already know to help us understand equivalent fractions. Year 6 have focused on percentages of amounts and long division!! It been a tricky week but our determination and perseverance has paid off and we have had many successes! We have started our new unit in Geography this week, ‘The Rainforest’. The children have used atlases to locate the countries in which rainforests can be found. Science this week has seen UKS2 learning how the nutrients pass from the digestive system to the circulatory system. Wow - we have been very busy!!!

attendance

54 pupils have maintained 100% attendance so far this academic year.

Current whole school attendance is 95.15%.

Our attendance figures for week 2 of Term 3 were as follows. Well done to Mrs Jones Class for having the best attendance in week 2!

Lateness

During the last school week, we had 30_incidences of lateness. This is a significant increase on last week's figure.

Lateness has a negative impact on us all. Being late may disrupt teaching and learning, affect achievement and embarrass or upset a child.

Being punctual helps children:

  • To be ready for learning and not miss learning opportunities

  • To settle into the day

  • To get into good habits for the future, both in schooling and work

Please be reminded that doors open at 8:45 and registration is at 9:00. This gives you 15 minutes to be early and have a calm start to the day.

Meet the team

Meet Mrs Newton

Hello everyone! My name is Mrs Newton and you will find me in the Reception/Year 1 Badger class working with individual children and small groups.

I first began my Teaching Assistant journey in 2016 when my children started primary school. I have had the pleasure of working here at Metheringham Primary since September 2020. I absolutely love working with your children each day and always enjoy trying to make them laugh and smile!

I have two children, who are twins, in Year 6. They are moving onto secondary school in September! (I won't pretend I'm not nervous!!). I also have a little old dog called Ellie who mostly sleeps all day but does enjoy going on walks!

At the weekends and during the holidays, I love to keep busy and I enjoy days out with my family. We are big Lincoln City fans and we spend most Saturdays watching them play!

This week's tweets!

TTRockstars

Every child from Year 3 upwards has a TTRockstars account which can be accessed in school or at home via the website TTRockstars

Each issue we will list the latest leader board for Times Tables Rockstars. To get on the leader board, you need to play 'studio' on TTRockstars and you need to play at least ten times.

Please find the current leader board and the class 'top rockers'.

Inspired!

Two weeks ago, LKS2 were treated to a visit from Roots to Food. They learned how to cook a delicious Italian meal and make a healthy smoothie! We have been blown away by the amount of children who have been inspired by this and have made this dish at home for their families. Look at these chefs in action...

Safer Internet Day

Dan's Big Fat Online Safety Quiz

Tue, 7 February 2023, 18:00 – 19:00

The theme of this years Safer Internet Day is 'Want to talk about it? Making space for conversation about life online.'

We want children to know the struggles as adults that we had at their age. Did you own a Nokia 3310? Were you a master of snake? Was the first social media platform you used Friends Reunited or MSN Messenger? Equally, let your children teach you about the latest apps, games and TikTok trends….

As part of Safer Internet Day 2023 we are having a virtual quiz over Teams. We want parents/carers and their children to join forces. Form the ultimate team and prove that you are the most knowledgeable family in Lincolnshire. You will be tested on the latest apps and games and perhaps some old school technology!

NSPCC ROCKS

Calling All Key Stage Two Rockstars

February 3rd is NSPCC Number Day! As part of our commitment to make maths exciting and high profile in our school, we've decided to take part in a friendly competition involving schools in the United Kingdom. It's a 1-day competition which starts on Friday 3rd February 2023 at 07:30 GMT and ends at 19:30 GMT. It's all done online via play.ttrockstars.com.

Children can play in any gamemode with every correct answer to a multiplication or division question, earning themselves, their class and the school a point. The Times Tables Rock Stars platform will calculate the class average (the number of correct answers per pupil in the class who play during the competition hours, subject to a 60-minute limit (see below)). Winning classes in the school and in the competition as a whole will be the ones with the highest average.

To support player wellbeing, there is a time limit of 60-minutes per player. In other words, each player can earn competition points for up to 60-minutes between 07:30 GMT and 19:30 GMT on Friday 3rd February. Once the player goes beyond 60-minutes of play on that day, they will still earn coins but will no longer earn points towards the competition.

Big Garden BirdWatch

This weekend it is the Big Garden Birdwatch. Get involved and tell the RSPB what you saw at rspb.org.uk/birdwatch. Send your class teacher a photo of your findings to feature in next week's newsletter. Happy spotting everyone!
