Learning updates

Foundation Stage Children in Reception have been painting portraits of themselves. They have learnt about light and dark shades and which colours to choose when painting their own features.

Key Stage One We have had a really busy and exciting week of learning in KS1! In Science, we have been working scientifically to explore seasonal changes and by observing the Autumnal trees and recording the temperature. We also had lots of fun programming Bee-Bots, creating algorithms to make the robot travel on a specific route. We celebrated National Poetry Day and enjoyed a visit to the library, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy our favourite books. There has been lots of reading this week, and we are delighted to see how much the children are enjoying it! Year 1 are also loving their Lincolnshire Music sessions and are having lots of fun singing and making music together.

Lower Key Stage Two It has been an exciting time in Lower Key Stage 2! As part of our Stone Age history topic, we enjoyed a fantastic trip to Creswell Crags, where we explored the fascinating rock formations and had the opportunity to venture inside the caves. It was wonderful to bring our history learning to life and imagine what life may have been like for people living in the area thousands of years ago.

In PSHE, we have been exploring the importance of personal boundaries and thinking about how we can communicate these clearly and respectfully with our peers. We have discussed how everyone’s boundaries are different and the importance of listening to and respecting others. To round off our exciting week, we celebrated National Poetry Day, with this year’s theme of Wonder. We enjoyed reading and sharing a range of wonderful poems, thinking about the things that make us curious and full of wonder.

Upper Key Stage Two It has been another fantastic week in UKS2! In English, we have continued to learn and internalise our model text, Zelda Claw. We have used drama and musical instruments to bring our suspense story to life, helping us to really understand the atmosphere, characters and events within the text. In Computing, we have been learning how to create, sort and use databases, developing our skills in organising and searching information. In Maths, we have continued to work hard to use our times-table knowledge and number facts to help us solve increasingly challenging problems. We are becoming more confident at applying what we know to different mathematical situations. In Art, we have begun learning how to use a lino cutter safely to create different marks and patterns. We are getting ready to develop our own designs and create prints inspired by the work of William Morris. We can't wait to see how our designs turn out! Well done, UKS2, for another brilliant week of learning! 🌟

📚 Our Year 6 Reading Ambassadors for this year are… 📚

We are delighted to announce our fantastic new Year 6 Reading Ambassadors!

These children have shown a real love of reading and are excited to help inspire others across our school to discover new books, share recommendations and develop a lifelong love of reading.

We are incredibly proud of them and can’t wait to see the brilliant ideas they bring to their new roles!

A big welcome to our new School Council for 2025/26! Following our school elections, our newly elected councillors are ready to represent their classmates, share ideas and help make Metheringham Primary School an even better place to learn. We look forward to seeing our councillors embrace their roles, champion pupil voice and work together to make a positive difference across Team Green! 💚

Eco-committee met with our school business manager Mrs Weston. She spoke about how much money we spend on water each year......£7000! This could buy:

🎬 1,400 cinema tickets at £5 each.
🍦 2,300 ice creams at £3 each.
🎁 700 £10 gift vouchers.
🧸 140 new classroom beanbags at £50 each.

Mrs Weston inspired Eco-committee to be water warriors 💦 The children also compared two homes to find ideas for their first water mission. We have some brilliant ideas to reduce water use around school. 💦 This week, we had tap filters attached to all the taps in school to slow down the water flow, watch out for more bubbles in the water to see it in action.

Here are some things you could do to reduce water usage:

Turn off the tap when soaping or brushing
Take a shower instead of a bath
Flush the toilet once
Purchase a waterbutt
Use a watering can instead of a hosepipe
Check for leaks, drips or running water and report it!

reading for pleasure

This week, to celebrate National Poetry Day on Thursday 1st October, we would like to share an autumn poem with you.

🍂 Hello, October! 🍂

Hello, October, you’re finally here,

With chilly mornings and autumn cheer!

The low sun shines through golden trees,

While colourful leaves dance in the breeze.

Crunch, crunch, crunch! as we walk along,

Wrapped up warm, singing an autumn song.

We hunt for conkers, shiny and brown,

As red, gold and orange leaves tumble down.

It’s time for pumpkin picking - what can we find?

The biggest, the brightest, the roundest, we’ll mind!

Then home for a book, all cosy and snug,

With a warm hot chocolate and a giant hug.

So, wrap up warm and head outside -

There’s autumn magic everywhere to find! 🍁🎃☕📚

author visit

📚 We’re Going Matt Goodfellow Mad! ✍️

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that award-winning author and poet Matt Goodfellow will be joining us at Metheringham Primary School on Tuesday 13th October!

We’re huge believers in the power of reading for pleasure, and we can’t wait for our children to spend the day immersed in stories, poetry and writing. Our KS2 children will enjoy fun, interactive workshops exploring Matt’s books, what inspires him and what makes a great writer, while our KS1 children will enjoy a special poetry reading.

And there’s more… Matt has kindly agreed to do a book signing at lunchtime! KS2 children can bring along a copy of one of his books to be signed.

Please note that a letter with further information about Matt’s visit has been sent out via Parent Comms.

We’re counting down the days until we can welcome Matt into school and get inspired by his brilliant words, stories and poems!

Let the reading adventures begin! 📖✨

cycle to school week and bling your bike

Cycle to School School Week – 5-9 October –

Help us win a Scootfit Day!

The primary school with the highest percentage of pupils cycling or scooting to school during Cycle to School Week will win a Scootfit Day.

How families can help:

• Cycle or scoot to school whenever possible

• If you live further away, park nearby and cycle, scoot or walk the last part of the journey

• Check bikes and scooters are roadworthy and ready to ride

• Encourage children to travel with friends and enjoy the journey together

• Remember to complete the Travel Tracker at school each day so your journey counts

Every cycle and scoot counts – even one active journey can make a difference!

The competition is funded by Active Travel England

‘Bling your Bike’ Day – Tuesday 6 October

On ‘Bling your Bike’ Day, children are encouraged to come to school on their decorated bike or scooter, in a way that make them feel happy.

These could be a bike or scooter that is decorated bright, colourful, sparkly — or even a little bit silly!

It’s a simple, enjoyable way for children to:

• Express their personality

• Feel confident and proud

• Celebrate wellbeing and creativity

What’s the prize? The top 10 most eye-catching bikes/scooters from schools across Lincolnshire will each win a £40 Halfords voucher, which can be used towards cycle/scooter accessories.

All blinged up bikes will be judged on Tuesday 6th October
