Thursday, November 21st

Bell Work: Update Table of Contents and tape-in the checklist you picked-up at the door. Also, write the DUE DATE for your FINAL DRAFT in your planner: Friday, November 22 (BLACK); Monday, November 25th (RED)

1. Literary show-and-tell

2. Essay Scoring Rubric... Also, remember, TWO people must workshop your first draft and complete the checklists. These need to be taped-into your comp. book for a grade. Your first draft needs to be taped-in too!

3. Review the Editing Checklist

4. Lab to revise and edit (NO printing today!)

  • Many believe that revising is the most important part of the writing process. Don't rush this! Use the pages in your comp. book, the pink outline, and your completed writer's workshop checklists with feedback from your peers to help you make BIG changes to your essay. Be sure each paragraph includes all the parts it needs to have, and be sure your whole essay flows well, is organized and makes sense, and includes lots of elaboration!
  • After revising, use the red editing checklist to make SMALL changes to your essay, such as correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, etc. Also, be sure your essay is FORMATTED correctly... is your name, date, etc. in upper left corner? Are your paragraphs indented? Does your dialogue look correct on the page?

5. AR if you "think" you're essay is revised, edited, and completely perfect. You're not printing today because I want you to read over your essay at least THREE more times today/next class before printing your final copy!

Write in Planner:

  • Word Choice Homework Song/Poem is LATE if you still haven't submitted it.

Bell Work: Make sure you have YOUR comp. book on your desk. Your back-story is due at the end of class TODAY!

1. Begin setting up your comp. book IN PENCIL; carefully follow these instructions:

  • Find the exact middle of your comp. book; you’ll see the stitching. I can help you with this if you’re unsure. The first half of your book will be the “Writing” side and the second half will be the “Reading” side.
  • You must number both the front and back of EACH page with PENCIL on the “Writing” side only! Each side should have about 100 pages. Number CAREFULLY because if you accidentally skip a page or use the same number twice, you WILL have to erase and fix it.
  • CHECK ALL YOUR PAGES to be sure they are numbered correctly and you didn’t skip any pages. Then, have at least two classmates check your pages too! Trust me, this could save you hours of time later!!!
  • On page 3, write “Table of Contents” on the header. If you don’t know where the header is, wait for instructions.

2. Back-Story

  • Review Scoring Rubric!
  • I need to have checked your brainstorming boxes before I give you the final draft paper!
  • Do you have a plan for organization/topic order/intro and conclusion?
  • NEATLY, with PENCIL, write your back-story
