Physical Education and Health is compulsory for all year 10 students and is taken for three periods a week (two periods of Physical Education, one period of Health). The focus is on the well being of the students themselves through learning in health related and movement contexts. There are four strands of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum that underpin the learning in this subject area:
Personal Health and Physical Development
Movement Concepts and Motor Skills
Relationships with other People
Health Communities and Environments
The key values of: safety management, being actively involved, movement and motor skills, relationships and teamwork, developing a positive attitude and interpersonal skills use are delivered through the practical element. Student voice plays a major part in the selection of the topics throughout the year.
In Term 3, students will look at an snapshot of what NCEA Level 1 Phyiscal Education looks like - this is to help students make an informed decision about what subjects to select heading into their senior years.
In the key learning area of Health, student's will have opportunities to explore the ways in which the physical, mental and emotional, social and spiritual dimensions of hauora contribute to healthy living. Health related topics include but are not limited to; sexuality education, destiny, challenges and changes, digital citizenship, drug issues and mindfulness. The flagship event in Health Education for Year 10 is the reslience course "The leap within"/Live Brave we do in partnership with the Van Asch Foundation and AJ Hackett Bungy.
