This 17-acre (so far) shaded fuel break is located along Highway 141 a few miles south of Trout Lake. This project parallels the highway and will help to protect ingress and egress within the Trout Lake valley in the event of a wildfire. It also will help to mitigate wildfire starts along the highway and provide a safer anchor point for firefighting activities due to the reduced fuel density.
The trees are being thinned by our Stewardship crew and then small material is piled along with large stems and boles and burnt. This allows us to remove the fuel from the landscape, as opposed to chipping or masticating which will transform the make-up of the fuel while still leaving it on site.
The Lonesome Pines HOA and surrounding properties have had a few fuels reduction projects completed in 2024 & 2025, with more planned in the near future. The goal is to reduce the fuels across multiple adjoining properties. This will help not only to reduce risk to the landowners but also to their neighbors and the community as a whole.
This 40-acre project is located to the west of Trout Lake along the NF 86 Rd, and runs north-south from Highway 141. Currently in progress and being masticated by a local contractor. It will tie into a larger fuel break along Highway 141 to create a continuous treatment. The area being treated is heavily timbered and has a large amount of downed material. Work is expected to wrap up in the fall of 2025.
Work began on this 222 acre fuel break in July of 2025. When completed it will run west out of Trout Lake along Highway 141 to the Skamania-Klickitat County line and span both sides of the highway.
