CLASS OVERVIEW
U.S. History is a year long course. In this class, we will explore the impacts of colonization leading up to the American Revolution, the fight for independence, the creation of the Constitution, our advancement west and the struggles of a young nation as we battle with, “that peculiar institution” of slavery, leading to the Civil War and wrapping up with the great task of rebuilding the nation through reconstruction.
TOPICS: American Revolution - Constitution - Westward Expansion - Civil War - Reconstruction (1776 - 1877)
One of the primary focuses of this class will be to look at the above events from the perspectives of the historically underrepresented groups of people including, middle class and poor colonists, natives, enslaved peoples and women, alongside the more common perspectives given in a typical history class. This course will focus on teaching students reading comprehension, critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills through the method of inquiry which is asking big questions and working towards creating answers rather than “finding answers”, as well as C.E.R. or Claim, Evidence, Reasoning.
