The Department of Biological Sciences of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Mindanao State University–General Santos was established in the 1980s with a strong commitment to excellence in biological sciences education and research. In 1982, the Department first offered BS Biology, BS Zoology, and BS Botany under the leadership of its pioneering Chairperson, Professor Gloria Forones Lagsub. However, after adopting the curriculum of MSU–Iligan Institute of Technology, MSU–General Santos phased out BS Zoology and BS Botany and instead strengthened its BS Biology program, which now offers specialized tracks in Animal Biology, Biodiversity, Microbiology, and soon, Plant Biology.
Today, the Department continues to provide high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs, namely the Bachelor of Science in Biology and the Master of Science in Biology, while also serving as a university-wide service department for courses in Science, Technology, and Society and other general education subjects. Guided by its legacy and vision, the Science Department remains steadfast in producing competent, research-oriented graduates equipped to respond to the challenges of biodiversity conservation, biotechnology, and the life sciences.
To produce competent human resources committed to the development of the Philippines and to help uplift the living conditions of Muslims, Indigenous Peoples, and other underserved communities.
A leading transformative University driving excellence, research, innovation, and sustainable peace and development.
