While studying at LVC I benefited from a traditional and time tested music education curriculum while being exposed to the latest music technologies available.
Originally a music conservatory, the music program at Lebanon Valley College (LVC) was founded in 1904 and maintains a distinguished tradition of excellence. LVC has also modernized its music program by building multiple music recording studios, and creating VALE Music Group. VALE is a student run organization where students can publish and license original works.
I was first attracted to MSU by its financial accessibility and willingness to work within the confines of a full time teacher's busy schedule. The learner centered curriculum allowed me to adapt each assignment and course to meet my own needs and practice.
Michigan State University (MSU) is ranked among the top graduate institutions for education and ranked 11th in online Master's programs. Its Educational Technology teaching staff includes venerable leaders in the field including Dr. Matthew Koehler.
I have taught full time as a music teacher at Universal Vare Stem and Arts Academy. At Vare I have implemented a music technology and harmonizing instruments curriculum.
Focused on providing quality educational experiences to Philadelphia's most needy scholars; Universal's neighborhood school model places the school at the center of the community.
Project Lead the Way is an esteemed STEM curriculum which emphasizes 21st century coding skills and collaborative productive struggle. The Innovators and Makers program introduces the fundamentals of algorithmic thinking through physical computing projects and block code programming. The online core training module I completed involved 40 hours of synchronous instruction led by 3 experienced teachers.
This professional development workshop introduced me to the fundamentals of teaching with the Code.org program. Included in this program is a learning management software housed and freely accessible on the Code.org website. The core of the program's curriculum includes block chain coding educational games and logic puzzles. The curriculum also includes "unplugged" computer science lessons that introduce students to important vocabulary and computer science concepts without needing classroom computers or technology.
A graduate level certification program developed to provide "game designers, teachers, and researchers graduate-level insight into serious game theories, serious game design, and human-centered design." (gamedev.msu.edu) I have worked the elements of gamification learned through this course into my teaching and even developed a detention game based on theories of restorative practices.
Piano proficiency is a standardized requirement for music education certification in Pennsylvania. Since certification I have expanded my playing and teaching skills while teaching a piano performance curriculum aligned to the National Association for Music Educators (NAFME) harmonizing instrument standards.
