Monroe County 4-H Scholarships

Scholarship applications must be submitted via this portal by 5pm on Friday, April 15, 2022. Mailed or emailed applications will not be accepted. If you encounter errors within the application system, please email Claudia Paddy (paddycla@msu.edu).

All narratives and supporting attachments (essays, headshots, etc.) must be in electronic form, preferably in a single PDF file per application. Please carefully read the award descriptions, eligibility criteria, and specific essay/narrative topics for each award.

You will be required to participate in an interview, which can be scheduled on Monday, April 25, 2022. The selection committee will make award selections by May 1, 2022. Winners will be announced in the June 2022 Monroe County 4-H Network monthly newsletter. Additionally, names of winners will be shared with respective educational institutes for local recognition opportunities by May 2022.

To claim his/her monies, a transcript demonstrating the successful completion of their first semester of the next academic year will be required by February 1, 2023. A reminder will be sent to each recipient as the semester comes to a close.

4-H Cat Program Scholarship

The Monroe County 4-H Cat Board Scholarship was established in 2017. It is the intention of this scholarship to support 4-H Cat project members with the opportunity to reach their full potential and future goals as post-high school education is pursued.


ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates must be a registered member of the Monroe County 4-H Program.

  • Currently a high school senior OR enrolled in a post-high school program. Dual-enrolled students will be accepted.

  • A youth is only eligible to receive this scholarship once.

  • 4-Her must have participated at minimum 1 year with cat program.

  • Applicant must maintain “C” average or better.

  • Must have completed at least 10 hours of 4-H work in current program year.

4-H Shooting Sports Association Scholarship

The Monroe County 4-H Shooting Sports Association was established in June 2010. It is the intention of this scholarship to support 4-H Shooting Sports members with the opportunity of growth and development as they pursue their goals after high school.


ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates must be a registered member of the Monroe County 4-H Program

  • Currently a high school senior OR enrolled in a post-high school program, including dual enrollment

  • A youth is only eligible to receive this scholarship once

  • 4-Her must have participated a minimum of 1 year with the shooting sports program

  • 4-Her must have a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative gpa or better

  • Must have completed 10 hours of volunteer hours in current program year

APPLICATION & SELECTION

Applicant must:

  • Submit a completed electronic application via this portal by April 15, 2022.

  • Submit a short essay (200 words or less) on “What I have learned from being part of the 4-H program with specifics in shooting sports”

  • Submit a headshot photo to be used in press-release

  • Provide two letters of recommendation from high school teacher or counselor and one from 4-H leader or Shooting Sports Instructor

  • Submit documentation of 10 hours of volunteer time (hour log, official letter, etc)

Charles Knabusch Memorial Scholarship

The Charles Knabusch Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998, in the memory of Mr. Knabusch, who had served both as a leader and a supporter of the youth program. He understood and appreciated the goals of the 4-H Program, and realized that by teaching leadership and citizenship skills, our youth would become more productive citizens. By providing an annual 4-H scholarship, it is the hope that more 4-H youth have the opportunity to strive for excellence, reach their potential, and dream of setting and meeting their goals.


ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates must be a registered member of the Monroe County 4-H Program.

  • Currently a high school senior OR enrolled in a post-high school program, where you have completed not more than 1 year of the program.

  • A youth is only eligible to receive this scholarship once.

Judy See 4-H Academic Scholarship

The 4-H Academic Scholarship was established in 2002 with an endowed donation in honor of Judy See, who served as the Monroe County 4-H Youth Agent for 30 years. The scholarship is to be awarded annually to a 4-H member who has both gained from and enjoyed their 4-H experiences, who has shown the ability to set and meet goals, and who has shown leadership skills and the ability to work with all people.


ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates must be a registered member of the Monroe County 4-H Program.

  • Currently a high school senior.

  • A youth is only eligible to receive this scholarship once.

Larry See Sr. Memorial Scholarship

The Larry See Memorial Scholarship was established in 2013, in the memory of Larry See, who had been a 4-H member growing up in Wayne County and had served for 43 years as a leader in Monroe County. He understood and appreciated the goals of the 4-H Program, and realized that by teaching leadership and citizenship skills, our youth would become more productive citizens. By providing an annual 4-H scholarship, it is the hope that more 4-H youth have the opportunity to strive for excellence, reach their potential, and dream of setting and meeting their goals.

Marie A Siebarth Memorial Scholarship

The Marie A. Siebarth Memorial Scholarship was established in 2006, in the memory of Marie, who had served for 45 years as a leader in Monroe County. During her tenure as a leader, she had been both an outstanding supporter of youth and understood the value of youth being involved in the fair. Marie began serving as a Foods Superintendent at the fair in 1969 and continued to serve in this capacity, serving our youth and the 4-H Program. She realized the strengths that the program brought to our youth and how it would make them more productive citizens in the future. By providing an annual 4-H scholarship, it is the hope that more youth have the opportunity to reach their potential and have the ability to set and meet future goals.


ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates must be a registered member of the Monroe County 4-H Program.

  • Currently a high school senior.

  • Consideration will be given to youth who have been involved in the 4-H Foods project.

  • A youth is only eligible to receive this scholarship once.

Wayne & Suzanne Lennard Memorial Scholarship

The Wayne and Suzanne Lennard Memorial Scholarship was established to preserve their memories and to benefit a young person. Mr. and Mrs. Lennard died in early 2002, only 40 days apart, after a marriage of over 59 years. They were both actively involved in the founding, development, operation, and management of one of the largest potato chip and seed farms in the State of Michigan. Both were actively involved in the farm right up to their deaths. They devoted their entire lives to agriculture. This scholarship has been created to assist young people to pursue an education in agriculture and permit them to make contributions to agriculture, much like the Lennard’s did.


ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants must be a Michigan high school senior, or a graduate of a Michigan high school who is currently enrolled at Michigan State University.

  • Applicants must major, or plan to major, in Agriscience, Agribusiness Management, Crop and Soil Sciences, Horticulture, or Entomology.

  • Applicants who are high school seniors must have been accepted for admission to Michigan State University in order to be awarded the scholarship.

  • Applicants who are graduates from a Monroe County high school will be given preferential consideration over other candidates.

Larry Kreps Sr. & Larry Kreps III Memorial Scholarship

In 1995, the Monroe County 4-H Program and the Junior Livestock Association lost a leader, Larry Kreps Sr., who had made a tremendous impact on the lives of many of our youth. In 2009, Larry Kreps III, his grandson died suddenly, which was a loss to both members and parents alike. In order to keep their memories alive, this scholarship fund was established enabling 4-H youth, who are enrolled in the large livestock program, the opportunity to apply for funds which would allow them to enroll in post-high school education.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates must be a registered member of the Monroe County 4-H Program and 19 years of age or younger.

  • Candidates must have raised and shown beef, sheep, or swine at the Monroe County Fair.

  • Currently a high school senior OR enrolled in a post-high school program, where you have completed not more than 1 year of the program.

  • A youth is only eligible to receive this scholarship once.

APPLICATION & SELECTION

Applicant must:

  • Submit a short essay (200 words or less) on what they have learned by being a part of the 4-H Junior Livestock Association.

Paul McGuire Memorial Scholarship

The Paul McGuire Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000, in memory of Paul who was very involved with 4-H. He was a leader for over 20 years. He was active in the dog and horse programs. Paul was also very involved in activities outside of 4-H, such as karate. Paul believed in the importance of expanding one’s knowledge. All the activities in which he was involved were centered on expanding one’s knowledge. This scholarship was started to preserve the memory of Paul by helping the youth of the 4-H Program continue in expanding the knowledge of their minds. This scholarship is supported by the Monroe County 4-H Dog Program.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates must be a registered member of the Monroe County 4-H Program, preference will be given to those who are directly participating in the dog project, but not required.

  • Currently a high school senior in Monroe County OR enrolled in a post-high school program, where you have completed not more than 1 year.

  • The youth is only eligible to earn the scholarship one time.

  • A youth must have a “C” average or better. Twenty hours of Monroe County 4-H work within 1 year of the application.

Ruth Ruehs Memorial Scholarship

The Ruth Ruehs Memorial Scholarship is a newly established scholarship this year of 2022, in memory of Ruth who was a dedicated volunteer towards the Monroe County 4-H Program. She was part of this program for many years and was most known for her work as Treasurer for our 4-H Council. Her being an employee of Monroe Bank and Trust made for smooth 4-H banking. Her knowledge helped with large projects such as the Spaghetti Dinner and Auction and the Small and Large Animal Auctions during Fair. This scholarship was started to preserve the memory of Ruth by helping the youth of the 4-H Program continue in expanding their knowledge and experiences to prepare them for the next chapter of life.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates must be a registered member of the Monroe County 4-H Program.

  • Currently a high school senior OR enrolled in a post-high school program.

  • A youth is only eligible to receive this scholarship once.

  • Youth must have participated in an animal project during Fair the year prior to apply for this scholarship.

Larry Hammons Memorial Scholarship

The Larry Hammons Memorial Scholarship was established in 2015. Larry was a long-time 4-H leader and supporter. You could always find him in the sheep barn as he served as the Sheep Superintendent for many years. This scholarship will be a great tribute to honor Larry and his passion for watching youth excel and succeed in what they put their minds toward.
