I teach with the understanding that every student brings unique experiences and perspectives to the classroom. My goal is to create a space where students feel safe to share, challenge assumptions, and engage critically with complex topics: whether we are analyzing user experience in digital environments or exploring the psychological effects of advertising, health campaigns, or narratives. I design my courses with flexibility and structure: clear expectations and consistent support, combined with room for creativity, reflection, and personal growth.
I believe that learning doesn’t stop at textbooks or lectures, it comes alive when students can see how theories and methods are applied in real-life contexts. That’s why I regularly invite professionals from diverse industries, ranging from UX researchers and project managers to media consultants and directors, to share their experiences and stories with my students. These guest speakers don’t just give talks; they tell stories about challenges they’ve faced, decisions they’ve made, and how they navigate the evolving landscapes of advertising, tech, and PR companies.
Through timely feedback, one-on-one encouragement, and real-world applications of theory, I aim to build trust and agency in the learning process for all the students.
I have been the instructor-of-record or TA for a wide variety of undergrad courses, including:
Method Courses: Methods for Understanding Users
Theory Courses: Psychology of Advertising; Mass Media and Popular Culture
Introductory Courses: Understanding Media and Information; Introduction to Information Science; Media in a Changing World
My teaching is recognized by both University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, and Michigan State University:
I am very honored to receive the recognition for my dedication to student learning in 2021 at University of Minnesota.
I was proudly selected as the receiver of the "Outstanding Doctoral Student Educator" at Michigan State University, College of Communication Arts and Sciences, Media and Information, in 2023
Below are quotes from some of my students:
“now that over a week has passed since my final grade for MI 220 was turned in I wanted to thank both of you for the assistance and direction you have given me during my time in this course. This was my final class to complete for my undergraduate degree at MSU. Doing well academically in MI 220 was very important to me and I feel energized to perform even better in future graduate-level studies in Media Communications and Entrepreneurship. Thank you, for everything, and have a nice Fall.”
“I really enjoyed this class. In this class, I learned how to set up some research or experiments to understand the psychology and needs of consumers. And I also learned some related skills about that. During that semester, you were very patient and explained to me many questions related to the homework. I really appreciate about that!
This class has set me up with a strong theoretical foundation and boosted my interest in this area of expertise. I believe that in the future, this class can provide me more possibilities. ”
"The intructor was extremely helpful when special circumstances came up. She was kind and understanding and gave me ample time to complete the assignments."
"This class helped me get a better understanding of the material and gave a sense on how to apply it to other aspects of life and not just singling out for the assignments. Based off what we learned I was able to apply my knowledge to the assignments without any trouble. One thing i'd like to see improved or implemented into the course is to give more in depth examples to better demonstrate the material. Even by adding more descriptive directions can be a big help especially since the class was online and certain instructions can be interpreted differently. Overall I enjoyed the class and learned a lot from the course."
“Thank you for the well thought out response, I appreciate your consideration and valuable insight into making my work better.”
“Thanks so much!! Also takes a big amount of stress off my back, truly appreciate the understanding. Have a great week!”
“thank you so much for your understanding and support.”
“Thank you so much for understanding, it is greatly appreciated.”
"I've really enjoyed your course, both structure and content. I look forward to taking what I've learned and applying it in the future. Thank you again. Have a wonderful rest of your summer!"
I've been a mentor for undergraduate students, master students, and fresh PhD students. I am part of the PhD pal program in our Information and Media Program at MSU. I also offered my help for those who were struggling or debating in joining academia.
As a student mentor, I see my role as both a guide and a collaborator: someone who supports, listens, and walks alongside undergrad students and junior graduate students as they navigate their own academic and personal journeys. My mentoring philosophy is shaped by my own lived experiences: as someone who struggles with social anxiety, a woman of color in academia, and someone who has learned to thrive through both resilience and community, I strive to create a space where mentees feel seen, valued, and empowered to ask questions, take intellectual risks, and share their aspirations and concerns. Every mentee has a different set of goals, challenges, and strengths, and I adapt my mentorship style accordingly: whether it means offering emotional support, practical strategies, my humble advice, or candid feedback.
At its core, my mentoring philosophy is about empowerment and care. I want my mentees to know they belong, that their voices matter, and that they are capable of making meaningful moves for the goal they set for themselves.
