Example of peristalsis
This video (2x speed) shows an isolated segment of guinea pig colon in an organ bath. A fecal pellet is inserted into the oral end. Note that the intrinsic neural circuitry of the intestine (enteric nervous system) is sufficient to coordinate the movement of this pellet down its length to the anal terminus. This behavior was originally described by Bayliss and Starling (Journal of Physiology 1899).
Small intestine motor activity
This video (pseudocolored) shows a segment of rodent ileum in an organ bath. The ileum is cannulated at both ends and the lumen is pressurized with fluid to evoke mixing/churning patterns of motility that mechanically break down food and expose more surface area for chemical processes of digestion.
Colonic motor complex
This video shows an isolated mouse colon in an organ bath. Spontaneous contractions occur and propagate in the aboral direction. These are known as colonic motor complexes and are considered a 'housekeeper' form of intestinal motor activity. Colonic motor complexes (also known as migrating motor complexes) are driven by activity in the enteric nervous system.
