For the panel discussion on data science careers, the panelists will be:

Dr. Parisa Kordjamshidi, CSE Faculty

Dr. Parisa Kordjamshidi joined Michigan State University as an assistant professor of Computer Science and Engineering in 2019. Her main research interests are Natural language processing, Combining Vision and Language and Integration of knowledge in Deep learning. She was a faculty member at Tulane University and research scientist at Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition before joining MSU. She received her PhD from KU Leuven in 2013.

Dr. Yunxiao Liu, Reddit Manager

Yunxiao is a Senior Data Science Manager at Reddit where he leads multiple domains in advertising business. Prior to Reddit, he was a Machine Learning Engineer Manager at Twitter leading the Ads Marketplace team; before that he was an applied scientist at Uber working on time series forecasting, machine learning and causal impact. Yunxiao received his Ph.D. in Statistics and Operations Research and M.S. in Economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Michael S. Murillo, CMSE Faculty

Prof. Michael Murillo arrived at Michigan State University in the fall of 2016. Previously, he was a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory; he began his career there as a Director’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the Theoretical Division. Prior to that, he received a PhD in Physics from Rice University in 1995.

Dr. Shinhan Shiu, CMSE Faculty

Dr. Shinhan Shiu joined the CMSE department at MSU as a professor in 2018. Prior to that, he served in multiple roles in the MSU Department of Plant Biology including as the Associate Director of the Genetics Graduate Program. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Botany at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Dr. Alvaro Velasquez, Project Manager at DARPA

Dr. Alvaro Velasquez joined DARPA in August of 2022 as a program manager focused on artificial intelligence. His current research interests are at the intersection of formal language theory and machine learning for sequential decision-making. He holds an interdisciplinary research record of more than 50 publications, including work in the areas of artificial intelligence, combinatorial optimization, and logic and circuit design.

Dr. Yuying Xie, CMSE Faculty

In 2010, Dr, Yuying Xie received his P.h.D. in genetics and molecular biology, followed by a P.h.D. in statistics in 2015, both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research interests include Single-cell data analyses, Statistical Machine Learning, Bioinformatics, High Dimensional Data Anaylsis, Graphical Models, Causal Inference, and QTL/eQTL Mapping.
