We work to build the best basketball team possible from November to March. Players work to become the best player they can be from March to November.
Players - what you do with your time as a player in the March to November time frame, your time, will impact the success you will have (or won't have) during the season, which also directly affects the success we will have as a team (or won't have).. The choice is YOURS.
Shooting the basketball will always be an essential skill. If you can score the ball, you can play. The goal for every player should be to become a shot maker, not a shot taker - there is a HUGE difference between the two.
In order to take a legitimate step forward as a shooter, you need to take at least 10,000 shots from March until the end of July. The amount of makes aren't nearly as important as focusing on having good form while shooting game speed. With consistent GOOD reps and with years of stacking those reps on top of one another will eventually increase the amount of makes you will have!
If you get shots up every day from between March until the end of July, that's only an average of about 80 shot attempts per day!! This leaves a huge opportunity to get up even more shots as players are encouraged to shoot MUCH MORE than 10k shots!
What are the rules?
Players must take at least 10,000 shots during a 90 day period. (you are encouraged to shoot more!!)
Players must keep track of their shot attempts by recording their results with the Shot Tracker form (Click here for the Form) for tracking shots. You can also use the school's Dr. Dish to record, please talk to Coach Diede to learn more about that - as there are a few steps that need to be made to make that possible. Please note: The Shot Tracker form is the most convenient way to track your shots over 90 days, especially for players that are NOT currently in the high school program..
Players must record their shot numbers on their own, with parent/guardian signature to verify the legitimacy and accuracy! Be accountable!
Your shots must be at game speed with proper technique and form!!
If you are on a traveling team, either in the spring and/or summer - any shots taken at those organized practices do not count. It is important that you want to get shots up away from organized practices!
Honor System: A parent/guardian must sign off at the bottom of the Shot Tracker form for the shots to count (please note, it is impossible to trick the system. If you put shot attempts down that you didn't take, even with a parent signature, it will show!! If you want to be great, or even see minimal improvement, you have to put in the work!)
CONSISTENCY!! MAKE SHOOTING A ROUTINE, MAKE IT COMPETITIVE, HAVE FUN WITH IT, AND MAKE IT A PRIORITY!!
Who can become a member?
Any kiddo that is currently in grades 6 through 12, or if done over the summer you must be entering grades 6 through 12!
What is a game shot?
Shooting at game speed - working up a sweat and getting tired! You have to shoot as if the best defender on the other team is guarding you!
If you don't go game speed in your workouts, you won't make shots when you're in games! Very simple concept.
If you're not legitimately getting tired while shooting, you're not going hard enough and are not at game speed.
You need to be able to make shots while you are tired, like in games!
Establish your range with good form by starting close to the basket. Once your form starts changing, you are getting outside of your range! Everyone has a different range, and different speed!!
What type of shots should I work on?
Develop your overall game!!!
Post finishes, Transition Finishes, Attacking with on ball screens and off ball screens, Mid Range Catch & Shoot Jump Shots, Pull up off the dribble Jump Shots, Three Point Catch & Shoot Jump Shots, Three Point off the dribble Jump Shots (YOU SHOULD NOT MAKE 3 POINT SHOTS A PRIORITY IF YOU ARE 6th GRADE OR YOUNGER! If you cannot keep perfect form and technique from a certain spot, you are TOO FAR AWAY!)
The 10K Club will only include any type of Jump shot - not finishes at the rim, but it is still very important to work on your shots at the rim as well!
It is good to include all of these types of shots into your workouts
It is great to use your imagination - but whatever you do, it's all about repetition, repetition, repetition!!
Free throws should be included in your shooting workout (and DO count toward your 10K shots!)
Is it okay to guestimate the amount of shots I took?
No, Never!
Using the Shot Tracker and recording your shots - will make it very easy to keep track!
Go in with a plan of how many shots you want to shoot that day. For example a plan could look something like, I want to shoot 250 shots today: 75 mid range, 75 pull ups, 50 free throws, and 50 threes - having a plan always helps!
Do parents have to watch every shot when using the paper form?
No - your parent simply needs to verify to the best of their knowledge that you were indeed shooting and had the time/opportunity to shoot the shots you recorded.
I would highly encourage parents to take part in this mission with you when possible, but it is not required.
Parents, if you do go with - make sure players relocate their shot locations throughout the workout and that they are going game speed - with good/consistent form and technique!
Can I shoot more than 10,000 shots?
Yes - that is greatly encouraged!!
Shooting 10,000 attempts is a necessity to take a step forward, but to improve drastically you should look at doubling or tripling that amount!
7th through 12th graders should be trying to get closer to 35,000 shots!
Things that can help you have GREAT shooting workouts!
PLAN! Establish your workout times, and try to have that as a daily routine as much as possible - and go into the workout with a plan for what you want to do that day!
Start EVERY shooting workout with form shooting - close to the rim. Do it from about 5 different locations (3-5 feet from the hoop) - about 25-30 shots (see Form Shooting Video at the bottom of this page).
Create goals for yourself, short term and long term goals, and WRITE THEM DOWN. Then put them in a place where you can see them every day, so they're always present on your mind.
Shoot a variety of shots, and push yourself to develop new things! Use your imagination!
Repetition, Repetition, Repetition!
Develop a shooter's mindset - NEVER FEAR A MISSED SHOT, NEVER FEAR FAILURE!! You have to BELIEVE you are going to make EVERY SHOT, even if you miss 100 in a row - shooters shoot, KEEP SHOOTING!
Always incorporate Free Throw's into your workout - it is best to shoot them while tired!
Don't just shoot from a standing place, it's good to shoot off movement like you would in a game!
HAVE GOOD FEET, POP YOUR FEET, BALANCE, EYES ON THE TARGET, ELBOW IN TIGHT, HIGH FOLLOW THROUGH, LOCK THE ELBOW!
ALWAYS be ready to shoot before the ball comes (low athletic stance, hands up, eyes up, ready to catch and fire - always!)
Take and use shots that you would take in a game.
Keep practicing shots once you are tired - don't just quit when you're tired!
GO FULL SPEED!! COMPETE with others while shooting, try to beat them! If you're by yourself, COMPETE with yourself - try to improve your shot makes each 10 that you take, be creative - but always COMPETE!
Be relaxed, confident, and concentrate - free/confident!
Put distractions aside while working on your game! Snapchat, texting, etc. hinder the development process if you use them while working out!
