Red folders and Writing Materials

I have decided to leave the red folders with work in your child's backpack. Please do not remove it, as we will need it daily. In the event that we move to virtual instruction, we will continue with whatever we have in the folder. Additionally, I gave everyone a smaller "pencil case" just in case. You do not need to return it to school, but please keep it in a safe place so that we can use it if go bags don't go home right away.

Curbside Library Books

This year we will be using a new method to check out library books. The Google Site below is for students to fill out a Google form for a book request in the AV library. Students should click on AV and then they can watch the video on how to search books on OPALs and fill out a book request.

Hello All!

We had a great week this week! We practiced counting, read books, and had a successful first fire drill!

Letters of the Week and Sight Words

Each week moving forward, we will be practicing 2 new letters and 2-3 sight words. Sight words are words that students can look at and know automatically. Our letters this week are Ss and Mm and our sight words are "I" and "like". I will be posting the new letters and sight words at the beginning of each week.

Today you should find a paper book in your child's folder called I Like School. Ask your new reader to read it to you! It contains our sight words for the week. We will be making a book most weeks to practice our sight word reading skills!

Reading Logs

On Monday, I will be putting a reading log in your child's green folder. Reading can be considered part of your child's homework, though I will be sending an additional homework calendar beginning in October. The goal is to read every night for 10 minutes at the very least, however, more is always encouraged. You may read to your child, have them "read" to you, or read together. TIP: In kindergarten, we start by "reading" the pictures. Encourage your reader to do this, even if they don't know the words to the story. I will be sharing reading tips as we move through the year.

Specials

As a reminder, students should be following the specials schedule every day after school. They can access the Google Classroom for each special through Clever. NOTE: The word "Science" does not appear on the Science Google Classroom button. It says "Virtual Kindergarten" with a brown panda background.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Happy Sunday,

We had a successful first week of school! Thank you for all of the donations and extra supplies you have sent in to help your children stay safe and healthy. I would like to give you a few updates regarding communication, school work and procedures moving forward.

Google Sites

This year, there will be few if any paper notes being sent home. I will be using a Google Site for classroom updates and announcements. Please check this site daily for important updates. There are links to all specialist classrooms and school forms as well. If there is an urgent message, you will receive an email or phone call from me or the school. Please let me know if you cannot access the link to our site below!

Our Class Website Link:

https://sites.google.com/msdk12.net/miss-falconer-k/home

Google Classroom

We will also be using Google Classroom this year in the event that we need to switch to virtual learning. At this time, you do not need to check the Classroom regularly. You should have received an invitation to join today. Your child may access our Classroom through our Google Site or through their Clever page. Note: Though you do not need to check my Google Classroom, students should be checking the specialist Classrooms for special's assignments daily!

Clever

Clever is a platform that houses all of our district sites and apps. Clever will pop up as the homepage on your child's Chromebook. You can access specialist Google Classrooms through this platform.

Green Folders

I will be putting a green folder in your child's backpack this week for any projects and worksheets they complete. Anything that is sent home in this folder can be taken out and does not need to return, unless there is a note to do so. Please keep this folder inside of your child's backpack so that they have a safe place to store work.

Homework

At this time, we do not expect to begin homework until October. I will explain more about our homework procedures as we get closer to the end of September.

Lunch

For the first marking period, students can order lunch each morning at no cost. If your child has come home with a lunch, you do not need to worry about a bill. If you have contacted me or the office about receiving lunch daily, I am already aware. If your child needs a lunch daily, please let me know ASAP if you have not already. At this time, I do not have a lunch menu.

Masks and Safety Procedures

As a class, we are getting into the habit of staying distant, washing hands frequently and wearing masks for long periods. We have made great progress since day one! However, I noticed that several students struggled to keep their noses covered this week. While I have been able to verbally direct students to adjust their masks, it may be helpful to experiment with ways to keep masks from slipping at home as well. If you are noticing that your child's mask isn't fitting well, here are a few tips for adjusting them:

  • Twist the ear loops for a better fit.

  • If your child's mask has a nose bridge, teach them how to pinch it to keep their mask from sliding.

  • Purchase or make mask loop extenders or adjusters.

Thank you for your patience this first week! Information and guidelines are ever changing and I hope to be able to share more with you soon! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
