Fifth Grade Curriculum

Reading/Language/Spelling

We use the Reading Wonders series. It utilizes nonfiction and fiction stories on a weekly basis. The language and spelling skills are tied in with the stories. In addition, we will read several class novels.

Math

We follow the Illinois Learning Standards. In 5th grade, we review Place Value, then move on to Multiplication, Division, Volume, Fractions, Decimals, and finish up the year with a little bit of Geometry.

Science

This year, we have adopted the Next Generation Science Standards. We are using a program called Mystery Science for more interactive discovery. So far, students are loving it!

Social Studies

In 5th grade, we cover American History in our Scott Foresman textbook. We start with an overview of economics and government, and then move into colonial American life through the American Revolution.
